Just last night, gamers across the land stood in lines, presented pre-order receipts in record numbers and skipped sleep to jump online and be part of the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Those skills and weapon classes better be learned quick, as the first significant contests on MW3 take place this weekend at the Twin Galaxies Video Game Festival in Ottumwa, IA.
It’s the 30th anniversary of Twin Galaxies, the official scorekeeping organization that keeps track of world records on all generations of games. Gamers are expected to travel from across North America for contests and events throughout the festival.
Those wanting the latest in Call of Duty bragging rights will have their chance in two sections of the event, with a 4×4 tournament held by Midwest Electronic Gaming starting on Friday and an appearance by MW3 in the Twin Galaxies World Championships series, where gamers will have the opportunity to earn a place in the pages of the Guinness World Records: Gamer’s Edition.
“This will be a first for Call of Duty players,” said Grace Snoke, Director of Events for Twin Galaxies International. “They have an opportunity to not only set a world record on the hottest, newest game released in the Modern Warfare Franchise, but they have the potential to appear in the Guinness Gamer’s Edition if they get the highest score possible. Throw in one of the first tournaments for the game at a video game festival, and it’s a win-win.”
The MEG tournament will be held on the XBox 360 version and the rules and details can be found here. The Twin Galaxies record contests will be held on the PlayStation 3 version of the game.
