The Meat Puppets rocketed into the spotlight in 1994 with the song “Backwater” after toiling 14 years in near obscurity. The band was aided by an appearance the year before on Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged. The attention that appearance gained them boosted awareness of the band’s 8th studio album, Too High to Die, and led to “Backwater” climbing all the way to #2 on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock chart. Hitting heavy rotation on MTV didn’t hurt matters either.
While the Meat Puppets would never climb that high on the charts again, they have maintained a cult following over the years, despite 2 band break-ups, a few member changes, drug problems, and a jail term for bassist Cris Kirkwood. The band is still going strong, releasing their 13th studio album, Lollipop, in April of this year.
