They met for the second time in the fall of 1974. For this Springfield Christian couple, of course, it was at church. He was a junior at Southwest Baptist College and she was a sophomore at Central High School. After the Wednesday night potluck meal, the young people went to a haunted house. While they waited in line he stood with her and talked. He glanced only occasionally at the Greek vocabulary cards in his shirt pocket.
She clung to him as they went through the old decorated house. The fright was enough to provide a reason for them to stay close. Afterwards, she left with the girl that brought her and he went home alone. He asked her friend LaDonna for Cindy’s phone number, but when he called no one answered. He asked LaDonna about her and was told that she was in the hospital.
As he and his pastor went to visit her they saw her on the street. She had just been released and was walking home. When he finally was able to ask her out, she said yes. Less than two years later they were married by that same pastor in her church, Hamlin Memorial Baptist in Springfield. Their ministry together has been in that congregation all these years.
Forty years later she is still the woman that excites him. He adores her more today than all those years ago. What began as a desire to be together has become a lifetime of closeness, intimacy, three daughters and eleven grandchildren.
Happy 40th Anniversary, Cindy.
