The amount of women who have decided to return to their “thirsty roots” increased 10% from 2010 to 2011 according to a USA Today article. Natural hair is something women in the Atlanta area have been wearing with pride since I arrived in 1996 to attend college. Now this beauty and style option has made it’s way off of the college campus into boardrooms, classes and houses across metropolitan area. Atlanta hosts numerous hair events each year. Here are two of the natural hair and fashion events that made the biggest “waves” this year.
FroFashion Week occurred twice in 2011, February and September. It included celebrity-hosted events, free hair tutorials; vendors for new and established hair products were available to attendees. Natural women of all hues and styles congregated to learn and showcase their natural hair experiences.
World Natural Hair Show presented by one of the godmothers of the natural hair revolution Taliah Waajid. Waajid’s line of hair care products has legendary status among natural women. Women looking for ways to shake up their look and learn better styling techniques joined one another at the Georgia International Convention Center for this amazing show.
Other natural hair events happen in Atlanta on a regular basis including the Natural Girls Rock luncheon in Dunwoody, GA. Atlanta Naturals Facebook group hosted the Nappy Holiday Social mid December. Ringlet Bombshell hosted Dangerous Curls in mid November. These and other local natural hair events posted on www.atlantanaturalhair.com
2012 has the potential to be another great year for women looking to return to their natural state of hair. With another FroFashion Week, World Atlanta Natural Hair Show and more intimate events scheduled to occur women in the Atlanta looking to take care of their natural hair will have more choices than ever.
