Bubba Jenkins, 2011 NCAA Division I wrestling champ for Arizona State, now has a new opponent for his professional mixed martial arts debut, according to reports at multiple MMA websites Tuesday.
Jenkins was orginally scheduled to face Chris Huerta at Tachi Palace Fights 11 “Redemption” to be held at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif. on Dec. 2. However, Huerta was forced to withdraw because of a stomach injury, and has been replaced by Jason Williams.
Like Jenkins, Williams is making his pro MMA debut… and has an amateur wrestling background as well. Williams was a two-time California high school state tournament runner-up for prep powerhouse Clovis High School, and also wrestled at Iowa Central Community College.
“There [aren’t] very many people out there eager to fight Bubba Jenkins,” Tachi Palace Entertainment Coordinator Jeremy Luchau told Sherdog.com. “I was a little nervous we might not fight an opponent until I received a call on Jason Williams. I had a feeling if anyone was going to step to the plate to fight him locally, it would be someone like Williams, who has a rich wrestling background at Clovis High.”
The 23-year-old Jenkins won the 157-pound title at the 2011 NCAAs, pinning former Penn State teammate — and undefeated freshman phenom — David Taylor in the title match. Jenkins concluded his collegiate mat career — three years at Penn State, then one season at Arizona State — with an overall record 94-24 record.
In interviews at the 2011 NCAAs, Jenkins announced his intentions of entering MMA. In late May, the Virginia native took the first step toward realizing his MMA dream by signing with Gorilla Management; two weeks later, Jenkins joined the American Top Team professional fight team in Florida.
