This past year has been unusual and unprecedented. Many occurances have been a shifting point in our society as a global community. Here is a pick of the 10 most relevant:
Stock Market uncertainty has been a roller coaster ride to say the least. The Global economy is having a hard time in picking up. Just this year the market has plunged from July through October and again in November. The recovery made little change as to the performance of the stocks.
The Occuppy Movement is a protest that has extended to Europe and the World. It is bigger than the Civil rights movement of the 60’s. There are mixed opinions among the general population about the movement. The truth is that the economic system is not working for all. Socialism fell into Communism and failed. Capitalism has it’s flaws and needs to restructure.
The Arab Spring Movement was sparked at the end of 2010 in Tunisia. Egypt’s protests dethroned Hosni Mubarak and the country is still struggling for more change. Lybia went into a civil war and succeded with the aid of NATO, driving Maummar Gaddafi out of power. Syria has been a an eye opener to the world. Syrians are heavily opressed and the Military Rule lead by Bashar al-Assad cannot hide it. Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morrocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Yemen have had outbursts of social unrest as well.
Congress dysfuncionality has had an impact in it’s popularity among the American population. The struggle of power between the Democrats and Republicans have resulted in last minute solutions, also damaging the U.S. bond financial ratings. At this point back in August is when the American people grew tired of the bickering between the parties and the uncertainty of the leadership hit an all time low.
The count down to the long awaited December 21, 2012 has started. The Maya most likely didn’t mark this day as the end of the world. Ther is no written proof. It’s an interpretation of ancient texts specialy from the Dresden codex. What is real is that once this date comes, the Mayan calendar ends a 5,125 year cycle and the next day will be the beginning of the new one.
North Korea’s power shift? The hermetic country has pulled itself to isolation. Nobody knows exactly what will happend after the death of Supreme Leader Kim Jon-il. The take over by his son Kim Jong-un will hopefully let the world enter North Korea. The main concern to the world is the Country’s Nuclear capability. How will the military regime handle is to be seen in the comming months.
Unemployment in the United States has been stagnent. The recesion has taken a toll on the average citizen. Skills and education come to play in a demanding job market. Employers cannot fill positions because of the lack of proof of qualifications among the middle class willing to work. The unemployment rate had practically no change in 2011.
GOP most unexpected Presidential election process. The remaining runners headed to the caucases are: Texas Governor Rick Perry, U.S. Representative from the State of Texas Ron Paul, U.S. Representative from Minnesota Michele Bachmann, Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney, Utah Governor Jon Huntsman and former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania. None have yet made a strong number in the polls. There is a historical apathy among Americans towards politics and needs revival.
Europe’s debt crisis had no truce. It escalated as the European Union tried to bail out the members. Sharing a common currency turned out to be more complicated than expected. The bubble exploded and the seems that mending it means stronger policies. Greek Prime Minister George Papandreu stepped down as well as Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi.
Escalating Drug wars south of the border. Mexico is struggling with the Drug Cartels and the spread in to the United States may be close. The Border Patrol is busier than ever. The crime is not only related to drugs. Criminal activities include human trafficking as well as many others. In February of 2011 an Undercover U.S. Immigation and Customs agent was killed in Mexico.
