It should not really be surprising to find a thrift store with a gospel ambience like Main Place Thrift Store and Office Stuff. The place is located, after all, in Tustin on El Camino Real- Spanish for “The King’s Highway”- 1631 El Camino Real Tustin CA 92780 (714-573-7503) to be exact. This is a thrift store that takes that “King’s” address seriously. Main Place Thrift Store and Office Stuff bill themselves as a unique Christian store and ministry, with the employees dedicated to helping people with thrift bargains, employment, and proceeds that go to various non-profit community programs. In this shop you will find not just the normal thrift goods, for instance, but items geared to help very needy people with cheap footwear or practical totes for bottled water mixed in among them.
If a person can get beyond the country gospel music playing over the store intercom without their ears bleeding, this is a good spot for bargain hunting. There is a sizable children’s section- infant and toddlers clothing listed at $1.99-$3.99. There were ladies dresses ranging from $7.99 up to $29.99, purses and belts were $9.99. Men’s items started at $5.99 and up. There are racks of clothing listed as brand new. These still have store tags on them, although the pricing of these items is not clearly marked and a salesperson has to be consulted. There was a large selection of new plain t-shirts in various colors- good for a Girl Scout troop puffy paint shirt-decorating project or some other similar craft project. There are lots of house wares- some small electric goods, nice dishes, ceramic and decorative items. Note here that a thrift’n-ista must be persistent in the hunt among these house wares, as they are not arranged in as organized a way as the clothing is.
There is an unremarkable furniture selection and a smattering of collectibles (how about a 1930 J Bauer mahogany baby grand piano for $14,000?) The day that I was there everything in the store was 50% off and apparently such special sales are common. There was even a spinning wheel at the cashier’s counter. Whenever a customer went to pay, the cashier would spin the “wheel of fortune.” If it landed on a certain number (number one was mine) the purchases would be 75% off, not just half off. The staff seem dedicated to having a little fun and making bargains available for all.
There is also a section of office supplies- the “Office Stuff” part of the store. This consists of a healthy assortment of office goods- paper of all sorts and colors, pens, adding tape rolls, envelopes, folders and the like. While many of the reams of paper have been opened, cheap paper is a welcome bargain for any residence that has a printer, since it is real easy to churn through lots of paper in a busy household. This office section is worth a careful look at any rate.
So take a walk on the King’s Highway over to the Main Place Thrift Store and Office Stuff in Tustin. With a little prayer, you might find a bargain. For questions, call at 714-573-7503 or access their website at www.themainplace.com. If you need to have donations picked up call 714-505-1734.
