Natural Family Planning (NFP) has a procreative purpose. It is geared toward life and fostering the image of God in all persons. It is essential that as co-creators, man and woman cooperate with God in a willing and knowing fashion, neither forced nor coerced. This procreative mentality is rooted in the fact that acting in a human way involves knowing and willing participation. Procreation, in accord with Divine Providence, requires a man and a woman to be fully engaged knowingly and willingly. Natural Family Planning must be taught with the understanding of the freedom of total self-giving in the image of God, Trinitarian Love, which produces new life in cooperation with God’s plan for creation.
This is what Couple to Couple League teaches in their Natural Family Planning classes in the Arlington Diocese and internationally. They have a wealth of information to offer to couples who truly wish to live their nuptial life with the procreative mentality.
According to Christine Landaur, whose life and marriage has been enhanced by the practice of NFP,
I feel like the Couple to Couple League has so much to offer women, couples and families; I know from experience. In preparation for marriage, my fiance and I were meeting with our marriage prep instructor. She said something to me that made a lot of sense and has stuck with me. We were planning to use NFP in our marriage, but she solidified that decision by saying “you have to decide when is it an appropriate and loving thing to do to stifle your spouse’s gift of fertility.”
For Christine, and so many others like her, that is not a decision that one spouse should make for the other; that is a decision made in the unity and procreative nature of marital love. She offered, “In our case, we are blessed to be two healthy individuals, so this gift was apparent. It was immediately clear to me that I would not want to stifle [his] gift- nor would I want to be asked to stifle my own. It made his love for me ever more apparent- and still does!” Couple to Couple League (CCL) provides the training necessary, grounded in the truth, to help couples learn what it means to live the Sacrament of Marriage to the fullest by remembering that the gift of fertility is at the core of the marital relationship.
To say thank you and celebrate the work that CCL does in spreading the good news about Natural Family Planning, CCL Northern Virginia will be hosting an Advent Family Mass & Meal (details can be found at the end of this article). Couples and families are invited to share the joy of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and then attend a free luncheon. The event is “a celebration for all those who support Natural Family Planning and marks a resurgence of interest in Natural Family Planning within the diocese.” Embracing fertility as a married couple will enrich your marriage and your family.
