The first day of wrestling was completed at the 2011 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Northwestern University Thursday, with the University of Iowa holding the lead in the team title race with five wrestlers qualifying for the semifinals.
The five Hawkeyes still in the title hunt: Matt McDonough at 125 pounds, Tony Ramos at 133, 141-pounder Montell Marion, Ethen Lofthouse at 184, and heavyweight Bobby Telford.
Host school Northwestern, in second place in the team standings, has Levi Mele (125), Jason Welch (157), Lee Munster (174) and heavyweight Mike McMullan making it to the semis.
Action resumes at noon Central Friday at Welsh-Ryan Arena on the Northwestern campus in Evanston, Ill.

What about T.R. Foley? Foley, 2004 NCAA All-American at University of Virginia and senior writer for InterMatWrestle, competed at the 2011 Midlands for his Wrestling Roots project. In the 184 lb. bracket, Foley, the 12th seed, drew a bye in the first round, then was pinned by No. 5 seed Braden Atwood of Purdue at 5:39. In the consolation bracket, Foley got a 3-2 win over No. 11 seed Cameron Croy of Harvard, but then suffered a 10-2 major decision loss to Iowa’s Jeremy Fahler.
