Astronomical Winter begins tonight at 11:30 PM CST | Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 10 AM CST | All Hazards NOAA Weather Radio | Live Chicago Weather Updates
Make sure to save extra time when heading out this morning. Dense fog has created visibilities lower than 1/4 mile in spots. In addition to the fog, light rain mixed with sleet or snow could also cause for some of the area roads, bridges, and overpasses to become slick. Dense fog will lift late this morning. The rain/snow will linger into the early afternoon hours before tapering off.
Other than the dense fog and rain/snow mix this morning, and cloudy skies this afternoon, today will be yet another mild day and day number 15 of having temperatures at or above normal for the month. Our normal high for this time of year is around 33 degrees. Interestingly, we’ve only had one day this month with a high temperature below freezing.
Tomorrow, we will see winds turn northerly off the lake. That’s when lake effect clouds and flurries/snow showers will develop. The best time for the lake effect snow showers/flurries will be Thursday night into Friday morning. There is the possibility of light accumulations of around an inch for areas near the lake.
Lake clouds will decrease on Friday giving way to mostly sunny skies for Christmas Eve.
