It was practically an all-girls night on Sunday’s American Music Awards presented live on Tampa Bay’s ABC affiliate WFTS, Channel 11, from Bright House Networks. The female artists nearly dominated the major awards including Artist of the Year. Taylor Swift, country music’s princess, was not only surprised by winning not just one, but two awards in the Country music categories, Favorite Country Album and Female Artist. Swift was literally stunned when she received the grandest award of all near the end of the show, Artist of the Year. The AMA winners were selected by the public who voted online for their designated winners. Taylor Swift made sure to always thank them in her trice-made acceptance speeches.
Adele also won three out of the four categories she was nominated in. Unfortunately she was not in attendance due to her recent vocal cord surgery. One of the awards she did win that was featured in the telecast was for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist. Her other awards not aired were Favorite Pop/Rock Album and Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist. Other female superstars who could not attend due to pregnancy and world tour were Beyonce who thanked her fans via video message for winning Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist and Rihanna who is currently in Europe on tour was appreciative for fans voting her Favorite Soul/R&B Album “Loud.”
Jennifer Lopez performed not only once on her own, but in a collaborative performance with will.i.am. She won Favorite Latin Artist beating out Enrique Iglesias who has won this category five times. Enrique’s father, Julio Iglesias, was the first winner in the Latin Artist category at the AMAs. Katy Perry performed her latest single for the first time live which sounded a lot like a country song while wearing a hideously pink hairdo and space-age costume. However, she was presented with a Special Achievement Award for being the first female to have five number one singles from the same album. Other recipients of this award have been Michael Jackson, Prince and Mariah Carey.
Opening the 2011 American Music Awards was Nicki Minaj dressed up like it was 2111 with some strange-looking speakers placed strategically on her rear-end. Her performance was more show than substance. She won both of the Rap/Hip Hop categories for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album and Artist. Another excellent highlight was seeing Bruno Mars beat out Justin Bieber (the only category he was nominated in) for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist.
