As they say, payback is a beach. You know? White sand, clear blue skies and a couple of Coronas with lime with a beautiful companion beside you. Well, after Saturday night’s grudge match between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, that’s probably where the loser is headed — permanent vacation.
That loser would be Margarito.
The question I kept emphasizing before this rematch was the condition of Margarito’s right eye after fracturing his orbital bone last year against Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao. How truly healed was that right eye?
Cotto asked the same thing Saturday night, expect of course, he used his fists to do the questioning. As it turned out, what I assumed manifested to be pretty explicit; Margarito’s eye, although not damaged as badly as it was against Pacquiao, would be his undoing.
“The eye was completely shut and we couldn’t go on. Before that we were vacillating a little bit. The eye was completely shut. He couldn’t see (out) and I couldn’t see in it. We have a rule in New York on that,” was the final verdict by New York State Athletic Commission appointed doctor, Dr. Barry Jordan which ended the contest and blood bath in the 10th round.
All three judges had Cotto winning all rounds but one with identical scores of 89-92.
After the fight, adding insult to injury, Cotto who let his true ill feelings about Margarito out during the lead up to the fight, told HBO’s Max Kellerman in the post-fight interview that “Margarito means nothing” to him.
Surely, the win meant a lot to Cotto as it brought closure to the devastation he suffered in their first outing, which was marred with questions after Margarito was caught illegally loading his gloves in his next fight.
But even a second go appeared to be not enough to wash away the bad blood between both men. After the fight, Margarito was still taunting Cotto. “I hurt him; look at his face,” Margarito said. “I keep saying it: He hits like a girl. I never felt the punches. I never pulled back. He was the one pulling back.”
Cotto on the other hand remained dismissive when asked about his personal feelings toward Margarito during the post-fight press conference. “I don’t have anything to talk to him. He has his own life, I have my own (here). He can keep on going with his life, I can keep on going with mine,” said Cotto.
Margarito received 12 stitches on his right eye after the fight, but was still able to attend the post-fight press conference.
For a guy who got caught doing dirty deeds, Margarito should be happy for another nice paycheck and quit while he’s ahead — unless of course he doesn’t mind ending up blind in one eye.
