We are continuing our series of interviews with authors talking about their main characters. What makes these characters tick? How did the author develop their personalities and quirks?
Today we are talking to C. Elizabeth, author of Absolute Obsession, a wonderful contemporary romance novel focusing on Rose Gerbaldi and her fixation on the British movie star, Michael Terrance.
Welcome to the Examiner, Char. Your new novel, Absolute Obession, has quite a premise! What inspired you to write this story?
Char: Thank you, it’s wonderful to be here. I’ve said it numerous times that the characters themselves inspired the story. There was no jog of a memory from the past, or a specific notation in time… It was simply the characters who found me and insisted I listen.
Your main character, Rose Gerbaldi, has quite a predicament – she’s obsessed with a British movie star. Can we begin by asking you what Rose sees in Michael?
Char: At first she sees a young man who has way too many pressures in life and who needs someone to listen. You see, Michael is torn about loving his job and the attention it brings him, always keeping everyone at arm’s length, believing they only want to know him because he’s famous. Rose proves otherwise.
Their story is the classic unrequited love story. Why can’t they be together?
Char: First off Rose is married and loves her husband, secondly they live a country apart and in essence a world apart, she lives in Canada, works full time and looks after her family. Michael lives on movie sets, attends premiers and lives in the dream.
Why do you think that people can relate to Rose’s situation?
Char: Rose is going through a time in her life that she questions if there may be more out there for her, is she missing something? She’s done her job by raising her family, looking after her husband and simply wants some me time. I think we can all relate to wanting that.
Did the character develop more as you wrote the book or did you have a pretty good feeling of how she was going to turn out?
Char: Oh! Rose was already Rose when I started to write. There was no denying who she was.
If you were going to develop a character sketch for Rose, what would you say are her strengths and weaknesses?
Char: Rose’s strengths are her ability to look after everyone before herself, always making sure everyone is loved, safe and happy. Her weaknesses are the exact same thing.
Would you say Rose is an introvert or extrovert?
Char: Neither or both, it depends on the situation.
If Absolute Obsession was turned into a movie, who would play Rose?
Char: Me. No, I honestly couldn’t tell you.
What does Rose do for a living and does she like her job?
Char: She’s been an assistant at a Financial Management Firm for twelve years, I’d say she likes it.
Is there a part in the book where we actually get mad at Rose?
Char: I believe so, yes. When she insists she and Michael no longer have contact.
If you could meet Rose in person, what would she say to you about how you portrayed her in the book?
Char: Thank you. It’s truly me.
Finally, if Rose had a few words of wisdom for my readers, what would she say?
Char: Please do make your decisions in life and feel confident that they are right. However, if fate is involved, feel confident even if they aren’t.
