Simply put, a gamer girl is a gamer that just happens to be female. Gamers are individuals that play many games, from video games to role-playing games, and who embrace the gaming culture. There is a distinction between gamer girls and gamers (guys), although there shouldn’t be one. There is a bit more to gaming culture than just playing games. Are you curious if you fit into the gaming culture as a gamer girl?
Do you play video games and/or role-playing games?
Don’t immediately answer ‘yes,’ and then excitedly exclaim your membership to the gamer girl club just yet. This does not include spending hours on Facebook playing Mafia Wars, playing mahjongg on Pogo, downloading hidden object games online or playing console “family games” that require little skill. If you do play these kinds of games, but rarely pick up a console controller, then you are not a gamer girl. You are a casual gamer, though, if that makes you feel better.
Gamer girls play many video games and/or role-playings games. While they might have their favorite genres, including action, FPS or RPG, that they play very well, they might also dabble in other genres, and even those silly “family games.”
Do you keep up on gaming news?
Do you visit popular gaming websites, read gaming magazines or watch gaming shows? Do you attend gaming events such as conventions or tournaments? Gamer girls get excited about the newest video games just as girly girls get excited about the newest designer handbag. Gamer girls could care less about handbags and girly girls don’t know how to hold a controller the right way.
Do you dress and act like a gamer?
Looks have nothing to do it, but the clothing does. Many gamer girls might wear dresses and heels, but they also own clothing that includes gaming pop culture. It is common to see a gamer girl in a t-shirt of her favorite game or with references to classic pop culture icons. They also talk like a gamer, and understand gaming language. Just as teens know text speak, gamers know 1337.
Do other gamers harass you or do non-gamers call you a loser?
If non-gamers called you a loser because of the games you play, ignore them. They will never understand. If gamers harass you, you might be a gamer girl or you might just think you are one. Gamers harass girls who are equal or better than they are, mainly because they are afraid of a girl beating them and don’t want you to make them cry. Gamers also harass girls who call themselves gamers when they aren’t.
