Author, humorist and National Public Radio commentator David Sedaris will be making a special appearance at Auntie’s Bookstore in downtown Spokane on Thursday, December 1 to promote the new paperback edition of his book “Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary.”
“Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk” is a collection of humorous stories about animals that Sedaris created with illustrator Ian Falconer.
According to Annie Bostrom of Booklist, “The ancient Greeks had Aesop, seventeenth-century French people read the fables of La Fontaine, and now we, jaded inhabitants of the modern era, possess the distinct privilege to enjoy the beloved Sedaris’ first collection of short animal tales. The appeal of this aesthetically pleasing little volume is inherent, as the American ambassador of the comedy memoir, human division, turns now to creatures of the hoofed and winged variety to make us laugh and, perhaps, learn a lesson.
“Illustrations by Falconer (of the Olivia children’s books) are a perfect pairing for Sedaris’ stories (both writer and illustrator have been published extensively in the New Yorker). In Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, foibled fabular heroines are given the opportunity to, finally, display all those humanlike thoughts and behaviors they’ve been banned from for ages.
“There’s the motherless bear who alienates herself with her incessant, self-centered solicitations of pity, and the potbellied pig who, no matter the diet, just can’t lose his breed-inherited descriptor. It’s impossible to imagine the brainstorm that conjured up these absurd, animated tales, but readers will certainly be grateful that they rained from Sedaris’ pen.”
The home page of the Auntie’s web site reveals all the details people need to know about the event.
According to Auntie’s, “This will be a ticketed event followed by an autographing. Purchase a Sedaris book or audio and receive one ticket for admission to reading. Tickets will entitle you to a reserved seat. Once reserved seating sells out, tickets will be available for standing room only. If you are unable to attend the reading, we will open the autographing line at 10 p.m. for the general public. Please note however, ticket holders will be given priority.
“Mr. Sedaris will appear on December 1, 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Seating is reserved and sold on a first come, first served basis. Groups of people wanting to sit together will need to purchase their tickets together.
“Questions? Please call: (509) 838-0206. Tickets are selling fast! Hurry now, before it’s too late.”
People who haven’t bought their reserved seating tickets yet may still be able to do so.
According to an update posted on the Auntie’s Facebook page, “There are still reserved seating tickets available for David Sedaris’ appearance next week! Wondering what you have to do to get one? Just buy any one of his books. Buying an audiobook will get you two tickets!”
