What features more than 100,000 Austrian Swarovski crystals, 300 pairs of shoes and 140 local children? It’s Ballet Arizona’s production of The Nutcracker at Phoenix Symphony Hall.
Ballet Arizona has presented The Nutcracker since the company began in 1986. Under Director Ib Andersen, Ballet Arizona has produced a magical, stunning version of this holiday classic. Even if you saw their production last year, you can be assured that they will present another great rendition full of stunning costumes, sparkling sets and beautiful dancers.
Based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann entitled The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (1816), the adventure begins with Clara, a little girl who receives a Nutcracker from her godfather Herr Drosselmeyer at her families Christmas celebration. Through a series of fanciful toys coming to life, a Christmas tree growing before your eyes and an army of mice fighting toy soldiers in battle, the magical story of the Nutcracker begins.
As in all great fairy tales, the Nutcracker turns into a Prince and takes Clara on a journey to an enchanted forest wonderland. The Prince escorts Clara to the Land of Sweets where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. And in my opinion, this is where the fun begins!
What follows is a colorful, unique array of dancers representing different cultures. Tea from China in bright red costumes leaping and jumping, Russian’s with their lively high kicks and spins, a fan snapping flamingo dancer representing Chocolate from Spain and much more.
Composed by Peter Tchaikovsky, the Phoenix Symphony orchestra will treat the audience to a live performance not just a recording of music.
Now is the time to make The Nutcracker a holiday tradition. What a wonderful way to introduce the arts to your children. Each year Ballet Arizona’s The Nutcracker delivers an awe inspiring performance that will delight everyone in the family.
