Batman: Arkham City is everything a Girl Gamer wants! It’s dark, brutal, and somewhat fantastical. A vast cast of Batman baddies have either a full storyline, a mini story or a cameo that it’s like tripping through a DC Comic come to life. While there is so much good to this game it is notable to find those things that grate. However, lets get to that later.
***THERE ARE SPOILERS CONTAINED IN THIS ARTICLE. If you don’t already have an inkling of what Batman is all about this writer suggest you close your eyes and starts singing LALALALALALALALA at the tops of your lungs to avoid any knowledge of the game.***
Batman is perfect. His design, his voice, the way that his cape and body armor are damaged during combat. He is everything a Diva fantasizes about in her comic book hero. Muscular and decisive…yum! His combat is good, too. A wide variety of gadgets make his utility belt useful.
Combat is varied and never boring. Do a “Beat Down”, “Silent Takedown”, “Inverted Takedown”, “Special Combo Takedown”, “Critical Strikes”, “Ariel Attack”, “Cape Stun” and so many more variants to take down villainous henchmen. Gadgets are enhanced and highly useful. The REC (Remote Control Charge) used offensively can give armored baddies an electric shock. With the gun-wielding thugs use the “Disruptor” to take the flash from their bang. So many options to take out all the reprobates!
The open world exploration with multiple side missions gives the gamer the time to experience the scope of Arkham City. Practicing with combat moves, leveling up and mixing it up with various iconic Batman ‘verse baddies make your time well spent. While it is not a vast world it is so gorgeously rendered that it will overwhelm your senses. Gotham is atmospheric, detailed, and exciting to explore. Seeing Gotham fallen from grace with its art deco styling despoiled by the dregs of society enhances the richness of brutality.
Catwoman. She’s amazing, sexy, funny, and can kick some serious butt! Her combat is sinuous and fluid. She’s faster than Batman with hilarious combat moves. Personal fav? In a particular combat move Catwoman grasps her goon and kisses him before slamming him to the ground. Classic! Even during pauses Catwoman is entertaining; she will groom her claws and face while she awaits your next move. Even better, the Catwoman DLC is free with the purchase of a new game.
The storyline is properly devious with visits from Batman’s favorite villains. The Joker (of course), the Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Two Face and so many more try to take out the Caped Crusader but with you behind the controls the Detective will unravel the mystery.
Honestly, there is so little to complain about in this game that it seems so nitpicky to even bring them up, but there are a few niggling irritating items to mention.
- Most notably, the Riddler. Don’t get a girl wrong, it’s not that the riddles and trophies, and challenges, and, and, and are not fun but they are excessive. With 400+ trophies and 200 challenge goals it isn’t E Nygma-tic, it’s egregious.
- Batman is a little bit chatty. It is purely a mental conversation intended to direct the player but is, nonetheless, annoying.
- Poison Ivy’s echoey voice is aggravating but she’s a hottie, so deal.
Batman: Arkham City from the National Girl Gamer? A richly detailed, epic step into the persona of Batman. Thisl Girl Gamer rates the game 5 stars! I generally won’t give a game such a high rating, to reserve that standing for truly exceptional games, but… this is the way Batman should be.
