Each year it is like Christmas comes late for beer lovers when Bell’s Brewery releases one of their most highly sought after offerings. Bell’s Hopslam DIPA will be coming soon, but it may not be in January this year.
When news broke that Bell’s Brewery was coming to Alabama, Hopslam was the beer that got everyone excited about all the changes coming to Alabama beer culture thanks to the ABV cap being lifted. The fact that such a nationally sought after and hyped beer was making it to Alabama store shelves and bars was just the news we all needed to realize that the sky’s limit when it comes to craft beer in our state. Just reading Hopslam’s description is enough reason to get excited:
“Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repetoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.”
Hopslam will be making its return to Alabama, but now it is just a matter of when.
Hopslam is a yearly, winter seasonal released by Bell’s typically each January. According to the Bell’s Brewery homepage, that January release date still holds up and Beer Street Journal is reporting that release date as well. The conflict of release dates comes from blogs like The Wine and Cheese Place and talks on Beer Advocate forums which claim that they have heard from Bell’s that a late delivery of hops has led to Hopslam being pushed back to February 8th. Who to believe is the question.
According to Beernews.org and Bell’s Batch Finder service (a way to track how old your bottles are), the good news is that at least some Hopslam was packaged on December 21st. This leads many to believe that kegs of Hopslam will be hitting first in January with bottles trailing behind in February. **UPDATE** Bell’s has released that Hopslam will be released on draft January 25th on draft and February 8th in bottles. **UPDATE**
Of course, this is all speculation. The right thing to do is not get caught up in the hype and get bent out of shape over a couple of weeks. Hopslam has been seen in the Birmingham and Huntsville markets on draft, at growler stations, and in bottles in the past. Hopslam is coming and I will keep you all informed whenever I know for sure when and where it hits. Prost!
