As 2011 winds down and we can look forward to hopefully a great music year in 2012, it is always around this time of year to reflect on what we liked and disliked in the past twelve months. There have been some great artists that have emerged, some that have failed miserably, and some that have catapulted back into our hearts. Here is a list of artists that got it right in my opinion, for more reasons than one.
J. Cole- After being known for a bit as the guy on the Miguel track “All I Want Is You”, he finally broke out with his freshman effort, “Cole World: The Sideline Story” which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 Chart. With a big help from Jay-Z, he has been called one of the ones to look out for in 2012, no doubt with the helping of a Best New Artist Grammy Nomination announced last month.
Jay-Z & Kanye West- Yes, I do blog about Jay-Z on my other page here, and he is my favorite, but I am putting these two together based off of three words- “Watch The Throne”. The long awaited album blew fans and critics away with chart toppers like the Grammy nominated “Otis” and the current chart topper “In Paris”, the duo proved that you can have two superstars collaborate on one album and have it work and flow very well together.
Kelly Rowland- Kelly did something that I never thought would be possible, she sort of trumped her Destiny’s Child bandmate Beyonce’. What I mean by this is when Beyonce’s “4” came out, she wasn’t able to capture a number one song off of it at that point (Run The World and Best Thing I Never Had didn’t come close). Kelly comes in with “Motivation”, a healthy helping of guest Lil Wayne, and had a number one single in no time. Add a Grammy Nomination for that and that spells success. Kelly has been trying at least in the American market to gain some exposure for herself since DC dismembered about 6 years ago, and it’s good to see she’s finally getting the recognition she deserves.
Rihanna- She’s like the gift that keeps on giving. After having a pretty great 2010, Rihanna released her third album in three years, “Talk That Talk”, featuring the current number one song in the country “We Found Love”. She has worked with a variety of people this year from David Guetta, Coldplay, Drake and Kanye and earned for the first time ever the coveted “Album Of The Year” nomination for “Loud”. Who knows what’s next for our modern day princess of pop?
Tomorrow’s blog- The Worst of 2011. Good luck to those who make the cut!!
