When the seasons transition from beautiful orange, red and yellow colored leaves to bare trees and white, powdery streets, our skincare regimen must transition as well. Not protecting your skin during the harsh winter months can cause major damage to its structure, moisture barrier and tone. However, here are some great ways you can protect your skin using your diet this winter!
.) Amp up with LOTS of Vitamin C! Citrus fruits such as orange, grapefruit, Kiwi and lemon and limes are packed with anti-oxidant Vitamin C. This anti-oxidant creates a barrier on the skin to help protect its surface from harsh winter winds and freezing cold air. Consume whole fruits when you can, but if it’s not possible (or it’s just too cold!) add some lemon or lime to hot water and get your vitamin C that way!
.) Make sure you’re giving your skin plenty of hydration. Dry skin can lead to interruption of the skin’s natural exfoliation process and therefore degrade the skin’s moisture barrier, causing dehydration and a dull appearance in the skin. Drinking half your weight in ounces is a good way to estimate your body’s daily water needs. For example, if you weigh 120 lbs, you should be drinking 60 ounces (slightly less than 8- 8ounce glasses) of water a day. Also, add foods rich in vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and hydration properties to your diet such as avocado, papaya and flax seeds.
.) Use sunscreen! Although not diet related, daily use of sunscreen even in the winter is still an essential step in preventing winter damage. You CAN get sunburn in the winter, and because people usually aren’t conscious of it, this increases the chances of sunburn in the winter. Sunscreen creates a barrier on the skin that may also help protect skin from wind burn as well. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen over moisturizer and under makeup, daily.
.) Pamper your skin! A day (or a few hours) at the spa is always a treat, and still neccessary for upkeep of the skin. However, to ensure effectiveness of the treatments you receive at the spa, homecare is ESSENTIAL! Why not pamper your skin inbetween visits to revive and refresh its appearance? SkinTea, from Edesia’s Garden, is a dried fruit & vegetable filled pouch you can steep in hot water and use as an at-home facial steam. The phytonutrients from the dried fruits & vegetables will stimulate cell turnover, freshen and cleanse the skin for a bright, healthy glow. At $5.45 for two uses, order at www.EdesiasGarden.com!
