As you all remember last month I reviewed three very popular beauty box subscriptions. Since then makeup guru Michelle Phan has even started her own version of a beauty sample box. Which has added to the madness. Most of the boxes claim to be worth the time and money, but are they?
This month I received Birchbox and Influenster. Let me start by saying that Birchbox has become a huge success this year. It seems like wherever I turn I see that brown box and pink logo everywhere. The cost of the Birchbox is $10 (shipping included). For each box ordered and purchase of full size products on their website, members earn points to use towards future purchases. My December box included:
Benefit Cosmetics The Porefessional (.25 fl. oz)
Harvey Prince Ageless Perfume (small beauty counter sample size)
Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Birchbox Pink (too small)
Orofluido Beauty Elixir (.17 fl. oz)
Prep ShowStoppers Designer Fashion Tape (2 strips)
Recharge Eboost Orange Natural Energy Booster (1 packet)
Worth $10? Maybe. Worth your time? No. Birchbox packaging is cute, but honestly the sizes of these samples aren’t travel size, but trial size. I can get most of these items free if I went to my local department store. I will say I adored the note tucked inside my box and I’m now obsessed with Recharge Eboost. A few weeks ago in Union Square a promotional team was handing them out for free, but I kept walking. Its safe to say if it wasn’t in my Birchbox, I would have never tried it. The lip gloss was so tiny I ended up losing it in the seat of a cab one evening heading uptown, but the color isn’t for woman of color.
My next box that arrived came right before Christmas was the Influenster Holiday Voxbox. This box cost nothing. Zip. Zilch. Notta. Yes, we all love things free, right? Influenster isn’t a beauty box subscription per se, but more like a beauty community website that anyone can join. Once you’ve joined there are badges you can earn by taking short surveys. These badges will help Inflenster pick who will receive the Voxboxes. The sample boxes are sent a few times a year, but not monthly. The catch is with these free boxes is to promote the products via Twitter, Facebook, or blog once you’ve tried them and do a post-experience survey. My box contained:
Broadway Nails Impress Press-On Manicure (Full set)
Softsoap Coconut Scrub Bar Soap (2 full size bars)
Montagne Jeunesse Face Mask
New York Color Liquid Lip Shine $2.45 (Regular size)
Mentos Pure Fresh Gum $1.69 (Regular size)
Larabar (half size bar)
There were a few bonus products that some Influenster members received, but weren’t in my shipment.
X Out Wash-In Treatment (full size)
Garden Botanika Lash Primer $11.00
Garden Botanika Perfume Sample
This box wasn’t too far from being amazing. I’m not a fan of candy or food being in my beauty box, but those Mentos had my breath on point for all the 500 holiday parties I attended this season. The New York Color lip gloss was a full size and a complimenting color for all skin complexions. In my opinion, Influenster Voxbox wins by far. Free samples, that are mostly full size, beats anything that I have to pay for……right?
Next month I will reviewing 3 new boxes. Stay tuned.
