Bishop Eddie Long wife files to end decades-long marriage: Eddie Long scandal to blame?
In a surprise to many, to others a next step in the church scandal, Vanessa Long filed for divorce from her embattled husband and pastor of the mega church in Georgia.
“After a great deal of deliberation and prayer, I have decided to terminate my marriage to Bishop Eddie L. Long ~ Statement from Long’s wife Vanessa early Friday. The couple wed in 1990, and together formed one of the country’s largest Baptist church, according to the Huffington Post.
However, in September of last year, four-male members of New Birth came forward with allegations in a scandal that rocked the church. The Bishop Eddie Long news suddenly occupied the media and airwaves, as the allegations focused on sexually inappropriate conduct.
Media pundits speculate that the New Birth church scandal may have taken a toll on the pastor’s wife. While she never spoke out publically about the sex scandal, it was clear the First Lady of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church stood by her husband.
Bishop Eddie Long divorce: Vanessa Long suddenly has a change of heart
But no soon after she filed to end her nuptials with Eddie Long, Elder Long released another statement ruling out the possibility. What happened between this morning and hours later? Ironically, in the earlier statement, she said her marriage was “irretrievably broken” and had “no hope of reconciliation.”
“Upon prayerful reflection, I have considered and plan to withdraw my petition for divorce from my husband Bishop Eddie L.Long…My filing followed years of attacks in the media that frustrated and overwhelmed me…Therefore, my husband and I have mutually agreed to find healing from these attacks…” ~ Statement from Vanessa Long on Bishop Eddie Long divorce filing.
One thing to bear in mind is the absence of any information about whether the couple will share the same residence. Mrs. Long said earlier that she and Eddie Long were at a point of legal separation. Hopefully, the Longs find a way to weather the marital strife for the sake of their children and congregation.
