Picture this: 102 Puritans set sail to for a better life, freedom of religion, and for many a new start. While they sail across the pond they are using up their supplies that would need to be replenished when they get to their destination. Finally they see land. They get all excited as they prepare to anchor. Before they leave the ship they take an inventory of what they need to replace. Then it happens.
After the first day on shore, the Native Americans watch from the forest, astonished at all these white aliens storming off the ship, fighting over all the goods they need. Kicking, punching, and shoving everybody and anybody that gets in the way. The riots that ensues scares the Native Americans away. A stressful first day after the first Thanksgiving. Pretty picture? Not really; it never happened.
In fact, this country has enjoyed a relatively peaceful Thanksgiving every year, up until the late nineteen seventies or eighties. Why? Blame it on Microsoft, Apple, cell phone companies, toy companies, and any other company that manufactures and markets new “products that you can’t live without and you must have” . Everybody comes out of hiding with a criminal element ingrained in their shopping DNA to maim or kill anybody that gets in their way to obtain that one item they simply can’t live without. Also you can put the blame on stores who put too much hype on these products. And on second thought, you might blame it on turkey, also, since this only happens after turkey day. Thankfully, NW Ohio has been spared this nonsense.
This whole mess takes away from the real meaning of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the day to meditate, contemplate, and give thanks to God for the blessings he has showered upon our lives. It is a Spiritual holiday, not a commercial holiday. And with Thanksgiving falling on Thursday, it should be more of a Spiritual “retreat”, to recharge your relationship with God. That is the real Thanksgiving.
So here is what I propose: Make it a federal crime to incite people to riot over stupid stuff they do not need. Charge the people who “criminally shop”, the advertisers who started the hype, and anybody who feeds on the hype. There has been a few deaths around Black Friday these past few days, and that is too many. The deceased loved ones could have been spending quality time with their family. Black Friday is now a day excuse the rioting, maiming, and killing. If you need stuff that badly, then your life has become worthless.
