All my “Singing Angles;Healing Angels” did good work today! I stayed behind and got feedback from “Fa La La” who was the nurse who sang with us in the Outpatient Clinics. This African American nurse is named Rivka. Rivka Fordham. Her mother named her baby after a dear friend who was Jewish. Of course Rivka said a few words in Hebrew to me. And, she thanked us for bringing joy to Kaiser and added to please come back next year. She was still high from our singing to her. And, the first little boy we sang to in the Outpatient Clinic, Enrique had been unhappy because his mother was sick. He certainly was not unhappy when we left.
Many of my volunteers have come with me for years and we are “family”. Mysty, Melissa, Barry, Phillip, Joe, Karen, (our reindeer), and Sally are regulars. I did not do any prayer circles but, know our singing, which is so from the heart, is a prayer. There is such a connection to Spirit when the heart energy is open. When I do the centering meditation, the guided imagery opens the heart chakra. So, even though I did not lead formal prayer circles, the healing energy was active and took place. It was evidenced in the patients’ and nurses’ reactions. So many patients cried with joy as we sang. More so than usual.
I have many images that give me “joy chills.” There was the lovely, young gal who was to have gone to Arizona to visit her parents, but she ended up in the hospital in ER with unexpected colon surgery. Her mother beckoned us in the room and told the story. Mom and dad came from Arizona to visit their daughter in the hospital. We certainly lifted her spirit and as tears of joy ran down her cheeks she wanted to be photographed with us. That was a “joy chill” moment.
And, I think of Meringa, the lovely older German lady, who also had tears and as Melissa and I sang “Silent Night” in German to her, she was singing with us. What a dear woman! It is not just the words we are singing; it is the love that heals that comes through. And, when we went into ICU, Melissa asked for a Jewish song because a friend of hers was with her mother who was in transition. I don’t think most of you knew the connection. Synchronicity. Our “Heenay Matov Umanayim” was the perfect song/prayer to call that mother home. Even Aziz was moved by the Jewish prayer song and teared us as she remembered her own mother.
I watched the struggling infant in NICU as we sang “Silent Night” and Carol Feiler also saw how this tiny, tiny infant hooked up to machines, went from struggling to breathing so calmly. “Joy chill” time. The nurse observed this “happening” too and commented. I try to get as close as I can in NICU because I have seen this calmness happen when I sing to the babies. Something comes through my voice. Know all the babies received our songs and the calming effect.
Who could forget the nurse in CCU who asked for her favorite song, “White Christmas?” She started to cry as I sang to her. Her mother had passed in May, and for some reason, this song triggered a remembrance and a release. I hugged her and let her know her mother is in her heart and with her. The power of love. I would not let her turn away for she needed to release those tears. They were healing.
And, as we welcomed the Christmas babies, Erika and Karina with “Away in A Manger” we got to see the cycle of life in the newborns. We saw the transition of one woman who had a full life to the birth of babies. I think of transition or “passing” as a “passing through to something greater.” Full circle.
So many wonderful experiences and hearts touched. I loved the image of the two men, both in wheel chairs as we walked from the elevators. Our songs reached them, and also the solitary man in the waiting room who joined in singing.
In ER, one woman who was with her husband who was getting oxygen motioned for us to come. Joan pointed me in that direction. Thank you for being my “eyes” Joan! As we sang and I hit my high note on the Noel chorus, he actually smiled and did a thumbs up! And he laughed! The energy rose!
And, who will forget that darling, gregarious little bundle called Simmond in E.R. who was so present to receive? What a cutie. Fear? He does not know about that. He knows about love and giving and receiving. When I told him Santa knew he was there, he asked “how.” I told him Santa knows all and he must have been a very good little boy for Santa to do a special visit. He told me he had seen another Santa. I told him ours was the real Santa. So, of course he wanted to know if his mustache was real. I think we all fell in love with Simmond. He was chattering and squealing with delight as we sang “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” He loved getting all the attention and toys. We certainly experienced the sweetness and innocence in Simon that I spoke of in our opening meditation and centering.
I love that the nurses join in with us, and I did see a doctor or two smiling and mouthing the words. My Director of Volunteer Services, Rosemary Wilson, has given feedback that we raise the energy and she can tell when we have been there. She feels it . Other groups have come but our “Singing Angels; Healing Angels” is the one that has this effect! It is the consciousness and sending of love from the open heart that is the energetic. My own energy gets raised as I do this work.
My dear cousin, Selma Ochs passed December 14th, and I felt a heaviness until I released her name in the meditation. It fell away and that dark, empty, space soon was filled with light and love.
It was good to have Angela, who is a caregiver, with us. SHe tended to a client before she joined us. Mysty, thanks for all those stuffed animals you brought and the creams, etc for the women. Gals, it is a great idea to save the cosmetic creams, fragrance samples and bring them. Barry, as ever, thanks for the stuffed animals you always bring. They are perfect for babies and adults. Welcome newbies Ashley,Olivia, Joan,Gerald, Samantha (from last year), Carol Feiler (who was on a list from the past),and Tessa into our circle.
Please hold a special angel, my cousin, Selma Ochs in consciousness who passed December 14th, and I know she is free and flying and her spirit soars. She wouldl have enjoyed “Heenay Matov Umanihim”.
The names of the patients have been changed to protect their privacy.
