A rather unsettled, fast moving pattern will dominate the weather across the Capital Region in the days preceding, and potentially right up through, the Christmas holiday weekend. Several fast moving disturbances look to pass through the region, with roughly 24 hours separation between disturbances. One such disturbance had passed south of the region early Tuesday morning, and will be followed by a transient “bubble” of high pressure for the day today and this evening.
The next in the seemingly endless parade of low pressure disturbances approaches the region from the southwest overnight tonight and into the day tomorrow. Clouds will be on the increase, as will surface temperatures thanks to return southerly flow ahead of a warm front. Thus, periods of rain and showers look to be in the offing on Wednesday and Wednesday evening. This fast-moving low pressure system looks as if it may pass inland, to our northeast and weaken. Such a scenario would not allow truly “colder” air to infiltrate into the region upon its departure.
High pressure briefly builds in once again for Thursday before yet another cold front seeps southward toward the region on Friday bringing a probable rain-to-snow shower change over scenario to the region as it passes through. This is followed by another brief respite as we move into the holiday weekend. However, we are closely monitoring a potential coastal storm that looks to form Saturday night, and move north and east up the Atlantic coast by Christmas afternoon. Future forecasts will contain further details on this storm, however, a White Christmas may be in the offing!
