Low pressure over the Eastern Great Lakes this morning will drag a warm front through the region by noon time. This was producing some light snow and flurries across portions of the region. This will be followed by a weakening cold front later tonight and into Saturday morning. This, as temperatures start out a bit on the chilly side, a resurgence of warmer air will boost them above freezing later today across the region, bringing more of a threat of rain showers as opposed to frozen precipitation. The system will depart by Saturday afternoon, and the New Year will be ushered in by high pressure on New Year’s Eve night.
A more powerful storm will approach the region from the west later on New Year’s day, bringing the threat for another round of rain showers. These rain showers may turn to snow showers on Monday afternoon and evening as not just one, but two cold fronts sweep through. The second front being associated with a more Arctic type airmass.
As we progress through the first full week of 2012, a marked temperature decrease is forecast, and it will truly feel like winter as temperatures may struggle to get out of the 20’s. High pressure looks to remain in control though, so aside from some potential lake effect snow showers, most of which should stay confined to areas west of the Capital Region, conditions should remain mostly dry.
