It’s going down once again like it only goes down at Locals Only, where all things art and music mix with Dragon’s Milk and laughter. Your host, St. Peace, brings to you none other than Caroline Rothstein as the feature on 11/28/2011. Caroline is a Brooklyn-based freelance writer and performer specializing in spoken word poetry, creative nonfiction, and journalism. As a member of the 2010 Nuyorican Poets Cafe slam team, she partook of the celebration when the team placed second at Poetry Slam International’s National Poetry Slam.
Caroline is a proud member of The Intangible Collective (www.intangiblecollective.com), and was both a member of and director for the University of Pennsylvania’s nationally-acclaimed spoken word poetry organization, The Excelano Project (www.excalanoproject.com). In 2004 and 2006, Caroline was the Upenn Grand Slam Champion, she is a five-time College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational finalist, and she coached the Upenn slam team to CUPSI championships in 2007 and 2009. Upon graduation from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006, Caroline was honored for her work with spoken word on campus with an event in her name at the Kelly Writer’s House called “The Caroline Rothstein Annual Oral Poetry Event.” (http://writing.upenn.edu/wh/involved/programs/rothstein/)
Caroline has competed, performed, and led workshops at poetry venues, theaters, colleges, universities, high schools, and middle schools around the United States for more than a decade. A longtime activist in eating disorder recovery, she hosts the widely viewed video blog “Body Empowerment”, (www.carolinerothstein.com/body-empowerment/) sharing her own recovery story as a means to promote positive body image worldwide. As a poet and a journalist, Caroline has been published in various literary journals, anthologies, and publications. She also has two self-published books of poetry: This Book Wrote Itself (2009), and What I Learned in College (2006). She has a BA in classical studies from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MS from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
