November 13, 2011 – On Sunday, the world celebrates World Kindness Day which was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement “to look beyond ourselves, beyond the boundaries of our country, beyond our culture, our race, our religion; and realise we are citizens of the world.”
Choosing kindness >
Kindness, not material things, increases our happiness and the joy of people around us. It is a quality that we are always free to express – never costing us money or time to display, yet we benefit from its fruits of reciprocation, friendship and appreciation.
On Twitter, we see successful people show examples of kindness and love. Personal finance expert and television host Suze Orman (author of The Money Class) posted several tweets to her 1.2 million followers on Friday: “It really is the little things that count. Your happiness is not found in others. It is found in you.”
Here are some quotes on love and kindness:
Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat. – Mother Teresa
A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave. – Mohandas Gandhi
Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend – or a meaningful day. – Dalai Lama
Absence from those we love is self from self – a deadly banishment. – William Shakespeare
I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers. – Khalil Gibran
In all of our reactions to people or events, we always have a choice to act with love, benevolence, humanity, generosity, charity, sympathy, compassion and tenderness. When we are kind, we are secure in ourselves and attain a certain level of peace of mind. Because we respect other people, ego and false pride are not present.
World Kindness Day is observed in countries including Canada, Japan, Australia, Nigeria, Singapore and United Arab Emirates.
