This is my favorite time of the year for wine. Harvest has been completed in France, California, New York and The Pacific Northwest. If you visit a winery now, you will smell the delicious scents of fermenting grapes!
Several monumental annual events take place right before the Thanksgiving holiday— setting the mood for celebration!
Moët & Chandon’s Annual Champagne Cascade at the historic Brown Palace Hotel in Denver was held yesterday. The 24th annual event is Denver’s equivalent to the lighting of the Christmas Tree at New York’s Rockefeller Center.
Even the Governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, a potential Presidential hopeful, got in the action and helped pour champagne from high atop the cascade with his young son, Teddy.
Imagine 6,000 champagne glasses carefully balanced and shaped like a big glass Christmas tree more than 20 feet high. Dennis and Mathew Dinsmore, a father and son team of professional Sabers started the ceremonies by hacking off the tops of large format Champagne bottles.
Marcel Pitton, General Manager and Director of The Brown Palace stated, “It would require more than 1,000 bottles of champagne to fill all of the glasses in this cascade”.
The event raised more than $6,000 for Volunteers of America. Moët & Chandon, is one of the largest producers and land holders in Champagne. They donated all of the champagne for this event, which had to be several truck loads by my estimation. Many guests stayed afterward for the Brown Palace’s famous Champagne Brunch that includes several buffet islands of roasts, cheese, seafood and dessert items.
Thursday November 17th is officially Beaujolais Nouveau Day, which celebrates France’s 2011 release of Beaujolais Nouveau, an early wine from the recent harvest. A light red wine produced from Gamay grapes and typically served slightly chilled. Georges Duboeuf is sponsoring numerous tasting events worldwide. www.duboeuf.com
