The turkey has been cooked and eaten. The chaos of Black Friday has come and gone. The relatives have packed up and left. People across the nation are now physically and mentally crashing. With heavy sighs slipping from lips, Americans are plopping down on sofas and giving thanks that they now have a moment to sit, stare, and do absolutely nothing. During these periods of de-stress, many people reach for an alcoholic beverage to calm the nerves. Wine and spirits are usually the go-to libations but one might also consider—in this post-holiday season—a glass of beer. One might be tempted to grab a six-pack of the cheapest brew one can find and guzzle them down one after another just to get the job done. That’s not the beer geek way, though. Why not take the edge off with a complex and quality beer that is also high in alcohol? Why not enjoy the drink as much as one enjoys the peace and quiet? Why not grab a bottle of Cherry Saison (9.5% ABV) from Funkwerks?
Color: Cherry Saison is clear but also quite dark in color. It is red-brown like a piece of wood with one too many coats of stain on it.
Aroma: While the smell of cherries is certainly noticeable it isn’t the most dominating aroma. Instead, the yeasty and subtly spiced wafts that typify the saison style are front and center. Cherry Saison is also mildly tart on the nose.
Taste: Cherry Saison is 9.5% alcohol and that high number is noticeable upon first sip. It isn’t like the burn of rubbing alcohol or even of liquor but the alcohol flavor can definitely be tasted. Perhaps what makes the high ABV tolerable is the fact that Cherry Saison is also very sweet and tart thus balancing out any unpleasant alcohol burns. Unlike in the aroma, the cherry quality of the beer out-flavors the saison attributes. That isn’t to say that Cherry Saison’s saison-ness is completely obliterated; it is still a little sour, a little spicy, and there is an odd aftertaste similar to that of almonds. Overall, though, the fruity flavors give this beer a drinking experience that isn’t unlike enjoying a fine wine.
Mouthfeel: Like a good saison, Cherry Saison finishes, for the most part, dry. It is thin-bodied, too.
America, sit back and decompress. Thanksgiving is over and there is about a month to relax before the next big holiday undoes the calm that Cherry Saison bestowed upon the beer geek nation. The best advice that can be given: stock up on craft beer now. Everybody deserves some great beer after the hectic nature of the holidays.
Cherry Saison is not a year-round beer but one might still be able to find it at specialty beer stores in the Denver-area.
