It’s been compared to Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is making a triumphant return. To commemorate 50 years, a special Blu-ray Anniversary Edition of West Side Story will be released on Tuesday, November 15, 2011.
The Today Show took viewers on a journey to revisit memories of the Oscar winning movie. Actors George Chakiris, “Bernardo”, and Russ Tamblyn, “Riff”, talked about what it was like to be part of this classical film. More than friends, they’re like family Tamblyn said during the television interview. After all these years, they still feel very fortunate to have been part of something this legendary.
Rita Moreno who won an Oscar for her portrayal of “Anita” shared a behind the scenes story. Recalling dancing in fine high heels she said, “Those shoes had very shallow backs. Every time I kicked, the shoe went flying.”
Moreno said it was one of the best times of her professional life. “I think it’s amazing that West Side Story is still being replicated in thousands of high schools, colleges and universities. That knocks me out. It speaks for the great music and the great dancing.”
The winner of 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture in 1961 long lives in the hearts of musical genres for classical films.
Who can forget the Jets and Sharks snapping and dancing in the streets, right into the hearts of millions of viewers! The musical numbers including, “Tonight,” “America,” and “Maria,” still remain a classic.
This legendary film introduced celebratory songs that are still sung today. Broadway musicals and plays have taken a little history lesson from this classical film. Television shows today like Glee and Fame pay tribute and honor the great music and dancing.
Last Wednesday, Turner Classic Movies and 20th Century Fox celebrated the 50th anniversary of West Side Story by bringing it to the big screen in select theaters across the country. Participating AMC theaters in Chicago took part in this event. Film lovers relived their favorite moments and shared their stories on Facebook. Moviegoers who took a photo with their ticket stubs during the November 9th screening got a chance to win a free copy of the Blu-ray.
