Running around shopping can be physically demading. However, there is quite a bit of body tension and stress that comes with sitting at your computer.
A recent study says 54-percent of employees will holiday shop from their work computers on Cyber Monday. And 87-percent of retailers are planning Cyber Monday promotions.
Using the computer too much, even for three hours a day, can lead to a health risk of developing Occupational Overuse Syndrome, Computer Vision Syndrome, low back pain, tension headaches and psychosocial stress.
Here are some tips to help you out, while checing out the Cyber Monday sales:
To avoid Eye Strain:
•Position terminal to avoid facing directly into bright light, coming from behind the computer screen.
•Use an anti-glare screen.
•Adjust the screen brightness controls to meet comfort level.
To avoid Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
•Adjust chair or table height so elbows are at a 90-100 degree angle.
•Position keyboard so as not to bend hands up to reach the keys; use a wrist rest.
•Clinch fists, hold for one second, then stretch fingers out wide and hold for 5 seconds.
•Organize the workday. Mix in other tasks with computer work to allow breaks from the computer.
•Hold the mouse loosely and click lightly.
To avoid Neck and Back Strain:
•Check posture – sit up straight.
•Keep monitor screen surface approximately 18-24 inches away from torso.
•Use a chair on wheels, with a backrest tilt adjustment, and arms.
•Be sure there’s enough desktop space for work papers and other equipment.
To avoid Conjunctivitis (itchy, bloodshot eyes) and Dermatitis:
•Be sure the screen doesn’t flicker or wave – this could indicate it needs service or adjustment.
•Look away from the screen periodically.
•Don’t forget to blink – to give eyes needed moisture.
Perimeter Eye Group in Atlanta says prolonged periods in front of the computer can result in eye stress and effect normal vision processes. If you spend more than two hours daily at a computer you are likely to suffer symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
Extended computer use may result in some if not all of the signs of computer eye strain including:
* Blurry or Double Vision
* Pain in Neck, Back or Head
* Loss of Focus
* Dry, Burning or Tired Eyes
