‘Dancing With the Stars’ 2011: Results, Season 13 finale November 22, 2011 — Season 13 of ABC’s hit show, Dancing With the Stars came to its conclusion last night with the season finale. The two-hour show included recaps of the season and its contestants as well as dance and musical performances and then the final revelation of the dancing champions.
Co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet introduced this season’s nine other pairs that did not compete in the finals. Most reprised one of their performances from earlier in the season. The co-hosts spoke with a few of them as well — Chaz Bono, for example, they said has been on hand for every show since he was dropped from the competition in order to cheer on the remaining competitors.
The three finalist couples — Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke; J. R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff; and Ricki Lake and Derek Hough all performed dances; were then ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd; then awarded points based on their placement. Rob and Cheryl came in third and were awarded 26 points. J. R. And Karina got 28 points in second place; and Ricki and Derek were given 30 more points placing first in the round.
That left the standing with the judges’ as follows, from lowest to highest:
J. R. and Karina = 82 points.
Rob and Cheryl = 83 points.
Ricki Lake and Derek Hough = 84 points.
The musical guests for the night were country group, Lady Antebellum.
Finally, it came time to announce the third place couple for the whole competition. Placement is based on a combination of the judges’ scores and the viewer votes from home.
Suprisingly to long-time viewers of the show, Ricki Lake and Derek Hough came in third. Mr. Hough has won the contest three times before, and he has never made it into the final round without winning before. Now, the contest came between two male dance hopefuls who had stories to tell.
Rob Kardashian, once overshadowed by his reality-TV family made up of several females, grew in confidence and identity through learning to dance and performing on the show. His pro partner, Cheryl Burke, who is a multiple-DWTS champ, said on camera that the young Kardashian is the amateur partner she is most proud of out of all those she has performed with on the show.
J. R. Martinez is a war veteran who was seriously burned in Iraq. His story was also enhanced by the fact that he performed on the show with an injured ankle. His pro partner, Karina Smirnoff, had never won the televised competition, and that may have been another factor going for or against the team in the minds of the viewers.
In any case, the winners of Season 13 of DWTS was announced to be J. R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff.
Season 14 will start on ABC in early 2012.
