Bob Hope hosted the annual Oscar Award Ceremony a total of 19 times in his career. Billy Crystal is second on the top list of hosts with 9 ceremonies under his belt. It appears that Crystal will be making that a nice round number of 10 come next February. Billy Crystal has been chosen to host the 84th annual Academy Awards Ceremony.
Eddie Murphy was scheduled to host the ceremony next year. He backed out after Brett Ratner withdrew due to his gay slur.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Billy Crystal, but I can think of many other people who would also be great if given a chance. Allow me to opine below.
Drew Barrymore-I hesitated putting her on this list, however she is a link to the vintage age of Hollywood. She is from a show business dynasty and has proven herself to be an OK actress. She couldn’t do it alone, but there are plenty of actors one could ad to this mix that would make it an OK show. Perhaps another famous off-spring such as John Clark Gable would be interesting.
Tom Cruise-He’s likable and good looking. Most women find him pleasing…. It would have to be with the stipulation that he never stand by the others onstage, as he is only 5’7″. Lower the podium stage crew.
Mel Gibson-Just kidding.
Will Smith-A natural born comedian and speaker, Will would fill the bill nicely.
Robert Downey, Jr. Robert has achieved one of Hollywood’s greatest come backs and would be a great host. He is also a natural comedian and very easy on the eyes.
Ben Stiller-Everyone loves Ben Stiller. He’s cute and pleasing, without being threatening to the male viewers. You may have some problem with Tom and Robert due to male envy.
Denzel Washington-Denzel has two of his own Oscars, he is pleasing to the eye and gracious. Appreciated by men and women, Denzel would be perfect.
Sidney Poitier-As long as we’re discussing handsome actors of color, let’s talk Sidney Poitier. He is 84, but seems spry and able to handle the duties. It would be OK to have a co-host to do a dance routine or two.
Robert Redford-would be great but I believe his a bit anti-Hollywood, at least at this level.
Hugh Jackman-Been there, done that….would do it again. He is so gracious, charming and can sing and dance.
So, above are some choices for consideration. Billy Crystal is fine, but there are so many other choices.
The Oscar nominations are on Jan 24th and the telecast of the awards will be on Feb. 26th on ABC channel COX cable channel 13 in Las Vegas.
