Indianapolis has been well known for sports, cars, and here recently craft beers. When partaken in these nice luxuries, there’s something that always seems to be a great compliment; barbecue. Despite the Colt’s record this season, it’s very common to smell the barbecue that fans are displaying before every football game at Lucas Oil. It’s nearly impossible to walk into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway without enjoying the smell of fresh barbecue and nothing goes better with a glass of Indiana brewed craft beer than a nice rack of ribs. So what’s makes one barbecue location better than another?
To answer that question we visited several barbecue locations throughout the city. A few things stood out as possible criteria for creating a great barbecue restaurant. Of course, it all starts with the food. Simply put the food must be good. The second detail that one must consider is the location. Parking, lighting, and a sense of personal security have to be prevalent. The third detail is the environment inside the restaurant. Lets be honest, barbecued food isn’t clean. Your fingers will get messy and after a certain point the knife and fork get left behind as you dig right in to please the belly. There’s nothing wrong with that and if you’re going to create a great barbecue establishment those things have to be considered. The forth and probably the most important aspect of formulating a great barbecue location is customer service. You must have a charismatic and courtesy staff. After understanding these details, a location was stumbled upon that exemplified these details.
Dick’s Bodacious BBQ, located at 50 North Pennsylvania Street, has not only surpassed many expectations but has exemplified the meaning of customer service. Let’s start from the inside and work our way out. Behind the counter is the food. There’s no hiding behind a wall here. You want to see your food before it’s served and it’s there on display. The display is exactly what we’re looking for in a barbecue spot, the basics. The chili, sweet potatoes, and macaroni cheese is right there in front of you, sitting along side the barbecue. When you have a display like this, the only decision that you must make is when to stop ordering.
Displaying the food doesn’t necessarily mean that the food is good. Well, Dick’s Bodacious BBQ made sure that wasn’t a questionable area. This food is delicious. The staff, which is highly experienced and has put in a lot of time perfecting their recipes, has struck gold with their choices. I personally needed assistance in putting down the bowl of mac and cheese. It reminded me of being back at home. The prices are unbelievable as well. Barbecue Chicken on the Bone was just only a few bucks. Full rack of ribs, and I mean a full rack was approximately $20. Who could beat that at a barbecue restaurant in such a nice area? Sliced Smoked Sausage, Texas Hot Links, Beef Brisket, Rib Tips, Potato Salad, Cottage Cheese, the list seems to go on forever. To wash is down, there both domestic and imports available, including locally brewed SunKing is available this location.
Lets not kid ourselves, this is a barbecue place. When you’re enjoying barbecue there’s nothing better than watching the big game on television. Dick’s Bodacious BBQ has you covered. Televisions are located throughout the area and their love for the local sports teams is apparent throughout the restaurant. Plenty of forks, spoons, knives, napkins are available at your disposal. Don’t worry about messy fingers here, it’s expected and the staff does a marvelous job ensuring that everything is well cleaned before you arrive and after you leave.
Now let’s talk about the other criteria which are location. In regards to parking, that’s simply not a problem. There’s a parking garage that located right next door and even expands above the restaurant. Of course when you’re downtown, parking is rarely free, but the small fee to park in this garage (which is owned and operated by another company) is minimum compared to the delicious food inside. Lighting is not a problem. Located at Market and Penn, it sits on the gateway to Monument Circle, once of Indy’s most beloved areas. If some reason you need to place to crash after filling yourself up with so much barbecue and perhaps a few beverages, there’s a hotel across the street. Who could ask for better accommodations?
As mentioned before the staff is simply amazing. They are very engaging to the point in which their service can be critiqued while you’re still in the restaurant. Just inside the entrance along Market Street, there is a bell that customer utilize when they feel they’ve received good service. Simply ring the bell and you’re telling the staff to keep up the good work. Feel free to ring it too, that’s what it’s there for. To extend their overall objective of providing great service on Friday, November 25th, when all eyes in the city will be looking toward the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas Tree, Dick’s Bodacious BBQ will have their hot chocolate available for customers to enjoy for just a minimal fee. Just imagine, watching the lighting of the Monument with a nice warm cup of hot chocolate from Dick’s Bodacious BBQ in hands. How can the service get any better than this?
