Self-published books are becoming a popular trend in fundraising for animal rescues around the nation. Self-publishing allows the authors to gain a larger percentage of royalty revenue, which means more money for the rescue they are attached to.
Some of these fine books are being offered at discount prices in this week’s Dogs Deserve Better eBay auction. All of the books have a humane theme, and all proceeds benefit the Dogs Deserve Better Good Newz Rehabilitation Facility in Virginia.
Good Newz is the chained dog rescue and rehabilitation facility that Dogs Deserve Better has built on Michael Vick’s former Bad Newz dog fighting property. Dogs Deserve Better is a 501c3 award-winning national nonprofit education/legislation/rescue organization dedicated to freeing man’s best friend from chains and pens and bringing them into the home and family.
Look for these books in the DDB auction on eBay:
A New Name for Worthless, a Hero is Born (humane edu 2-6 grade) written and illustrated by Rocky Shepheard. Worthless is a chained dog who has never lived inside the house. He suffers through cold winters and hot summers only with the help of his two friends Otto and Sly Fox. Puddles on the Floor (humane edu 2-6 grade)Written by Lorena Estep, illustrated by Tamira Ci Thayne. Chance is a beagle puppy who is just like every other dog-he wants a home and a family to love him. When he loses his first home and is sent to the shelter, he is devastated-until he is adopted by a boy and his mother, and life seems like it will be good again. But he has a little problem with leaving “puddles on the floor”. Without the proper training, he ends up in a horrible place-stuck at the end of a chain. A twist of fate sets him free to seek a better life.
Capitol in Chains: 54 Days of the Doghouse Blues by Tamira Ci Thayne
In August 2010, one woman got up the guts to carry a doghouse and chain to the Pennsylvania Capitol steps and chain herself in support of a law for chained dogs. Not knowing if she’d be arrested, ignored, or ridiculed, she did it anyway for the dogs who have no voice and whose needs are being neglectd by those with the power to make chain-ge in their lives. This is her story, and the story of the 54 days she and others who stood beside her spent chained at the bottom of the Capitol steps in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Unchain My Heart: Dogs Deserve Better Rescue Stories of Courage, Compassion, and Caring by Tamira Thayne & Dawn Ashby
These rescue stories from Dogs Deserve Better volunteers have all the elements of a great story: villians as evil as they come, dramatic rescues, and tear-inducing happy (or tragic) endings.
Scream Like Banshee: 29 Days of Tips & Tales to Keep Your Sanity as a Doggie Foster Parent by Tamira Thayne
An honest account of the perils and pitfalls as well as the joy and fulfillment that rescue volunteers face daily. Scream Like Banshee is for animal advocates embroiled in the daily adventures of fostering and rehoming America’s homeless dogs. Thayne mixes tips for those who need to step up to foster with tips for those who foster too much, adding a dash of laughter, a pinch of sadness, and a wallop of honesty, for a quick read you might not want to put down!
The auction runs until December 3. After that, copies of these books will be available at the regular price on the Dogs Deserve Better website.
