Doctor Who, which aired on BBC America on Sunday, December 25th, was another great special, that wasn’t so much about Christmas as it was about the adventure of the Doctor with Companions sans Amy and Rory.
If you are a fan of the series, then this is how all the Christmas specials run, where the Doctor is in between his faithful human followers, and is just traveling and helping where he can. If you’re a new fan, you may be wondering just what is going on. That is fine, once you continue to immerse yourself into the world of the Doctor, well then you to will just sit back and enjoy the fun that is a Doctor Who Christmas Special.
This newest addition, well it had some homage’s to past episodes, namely the Ninth Doctor tenure. Well there was the part where the Widow helps the Doctor to his Tardis only to see that it is a real police box, when the Doctor talks about the Forest of Cheem fancied him, and when the little boy calls out for his Mummy. All of these parts were from the Ninth Doctor’s time, and I thought a pretty awesome way to remind us why we love the wacky Doctor.
The episode also had a reference to C.S. Lewis’ Narnia, but no overt religious meaning, just the fact that there was a doorway to a different world, snow, and a huge forest that coincidentally was self-aware.
The Doctor, in his wacky way, was there to help repay a debt to the Widow, by assuming the role of caretaker of the house that she and her children were going, to get out of London and away from the war in general. But being that this is Doctor Who, hi-jinks and peril ensue and he is once again called in to help, only it is not his help that is needed but the love of a mother.
The forest that they are all in is about to be destroyed by acid rain, and the conscience of the forest wants out, and attempts to use the Widow’s son, but he is not strong to carry them. When the Widow comes in to save her children, the forest goes into her, something not even the Doctor could handle.
The moral of this special? Love in all its forms is what can heal all. From the Widow bringing her husband back from death, to the Doctor reuniting with Amy and Rory in the final scenes, love can find a way to heal. Nice ending to a wonderfully, fun and wacky episode, that also had moments of tearful reaction from me during some of the sadder moments. All in all a very solid episode.
