WBTV is reporting that a woman is dead and a four-year-old is in the hospital after police say a drunk driver ran a red light in east Charlotte.
According to police, officers were called to East Sugar Creek near The Plaza around 2:37 a.m. to the report of a crash.
Officers say 31 year old Eric Jonathan Cox was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe east along East Sugar Creek at a high rate of speed when he entered the intersection of The Plaza while the traffic light was showing red.
This is when he hit the side of a Nissan Altima with a woman and young child inside. Both vehicles slid through the intersection and came to rest in the southeast corner of the intersection, police told WBTV.
The driver of the Nissan, 26-year-old H’Luon Sin, died at the scene. Her 4 year old son was taken to the hospital with very serious injuries where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
Police say Cox was not injured in the crash and he was arrested for DWI at the scene. He was later charged with 2nd degree murder, Felony Serious Injury by Motor Vehicle, and Failure to comply with license restrictions.
Cox had an alcohol concentration (.04) restriction on his North Carolina driving record from a previous DWI conviction.
He has been transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
