Whole Foods Market in Santa Cruz and Capitola is offering many options for Thanksgiving Dinner; you need to order by Tuesday, November 22 for pick up on Wednesday, November 23, 2011. A traditional turkey dinner costs $99.99 (serves up to 8) and includes an oven-roasted whole 10-12lb. turkey from Sonora-based Diestel, herb stuffing, cranberry relish, turkey gravy, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, and pumpkin pie. The same dinner with an organic turkey costs $149.99.
Note: for every turkey purchased from Whole Foods Market in Santa Cruz or Capitola, $1 will be donated to the Homeless Services Center of Santa Cruz.
If you’d like to order a turkey a la carte, Whole Foods features a few different types including Diestel cooked or uncooked turkey offered in both organic and regular varieties. For example, Diestel’s “Heidi” organic uncooked turkey is $3.99/lb., while an already-roasted 10-12lb. Diestel organic turkey is $69.99. Whole Foods kindly offered me a few samples of some of their Thanksgiving treats, including a cooked Diestel turkey. The meat was delicious, tender, and moist and made a great dinner entrée as well as a fabulous cold sandwich filling the next day as whole birds.
I can recommend a vegan Stuffed Celebration Roast and the apricot glazed yams which were delectable. The one-pound vegan entrée is stuffed with butternut squash, apples, and mushrooms. I shared this with a few friends – two vegan, one non-vegan – and everyone enjoyed it (note: it’s on the sweet side). It makes a good centerpiece for a vegan meal, and is also good cold on a sandwich.
You can order your food in person at either location or place your order online (also by 11/22) at wholefoodsmarket.com.
Whole Foods is also giving away a few Thanksgiving dinners; read details at its Twitter Holiday Microsite (you need to follow the market on Twitter @WFMNorCal and tag #WholeForTheHolidays). There will be one winner a week until Nov. 30.
