Electronics Banned from Illinois Landfill as of January 1

Ring in the new and make sure to take your old electronic devices to a registered recycler as of January 1, 2012. Illinois residents are required as of January 1, to assist in the effort to keep metals and toxic wastes out of landfills as well as to prevent the loss of component materials that can be reused from being dumped into landfills.
The new ban is an extension of a 2008 Illinois law that required manufacturers to establish recycling programs for their electronic products. It is estimated that in 2010 about 33 million pounds of electronics were recycled in Illinois
According to Dave Walters, manager of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Illinois residents can no longer throw out old televisions, fax machines, computers, cell phones, video recorders, key boards, printers, DVR’s, monitors and other electronics with your regular trash. According to Mike Mitchell, executive director of the Illinois Recycling Association, “Trash haulers will be banned from picking up the items with the regular trash, though in some communities, residents might be able to call for curbside pickup.” He further noted that “Violating the law could result in a fine of $25 for the first offense and $50 for subsequent offenses.” (www.rrstar.com12/30/11)
According to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, a list of registered electronic waste (e-waste) collection sites and information for manufacturers, collectors, recyclers, and refurbishes is available on the Illinois Electronic Waste Recycling page. In addition, many local governments and other organizations sponsor one-day e-waste collection events. Other locations, including some major retailers, may be found by entering your home location in the search engine for the Earth911.com web site. (www.iepa.gov)
Mike Mitchell of the Illinois Recycling Association also suggests that people call their county waste coordinator or municipal office for additional drop- off information. His organization will be putting up more information regarding drop- off locations after the law goes into effect. The recycle website is http”//www.illinoisrecycles.org
