The Ferrari 458 Italia has been widely reviewed, raced and compared. The technology incorporated into this 570hp vehicle is amazing. On a nice cool day, owner Ben Treynor shared his experience and impressions of this incredible sports car. You may remember Ben from his modified ZR1 that I reviewed previously.
The Ferrari 458 talks to the passengers. Whether accelerating fiercely or decelerating with perfect downshifts, it has something to say, and it’s glorious! This is probably Ben’s most favorite aspect of the car. It burbles, it screams, it hums, it changes pitch, it goes silent. With all its multiple personalities, there is no need to modify the exhaust since it has a butterfly valve that opens up for “communication purposes”.
The quick ratio steering was what really impressed Ben. Super direct, no hesitation and confidence inspiring. It’s not darty, it simply moves directly in time with the hands, and in his opinion, an unprecedented feel for a road car.
Asked what he liked least about the car, is the throttle response is too sensitive for steady speed cruising. It requires constants corrections because it varies several mph which can be rather tiring. Perhaps a software update could alleviate this? Cruise control isn’t available but one would think with a quiet exhaust at cruising speed and adjusting magnetic shocks, cruise control could easily be a consideration. But for a purist, maybe just a software update.
The dual-clutch transmission is amazing with seamless upshifts and precise downshifts. It’s also a totally silent transmission, unlike the whirs and clicks from the Nissan GT-R I reviewed. Also, for a rear-drive, high performance car, it has very aggressive gearing.
The Ferrari 458 is so much more than the already spectacular F430. It features much more horsepower, better transmission and even more technology. When multiple sources call it the best sports car or best driver’s car in the world, they are not exaggerating. Below are the referenced links including a technical review of the 458.
