Following the trends may be my job and may make you look like a fabulous fashionista. However, every woman that can remember the 1980’s or early 90’s will emphatically agree with me when I say that if you put your entire fashion budget towards what is currently on trend, you will end up spending a lot of unnecessary money and making a lot of trips to Goodwill. That is why I am here to present you with five trends that have stood the test of time and will more than likely last as timeless trends for years to come.
Here are the Top 5 Trends With Staying Power:
1. Platform Shoes
From the over-the-top styles of Studio 54 to the clean, classic designs of Christian Louboutin, the platform shoe has been a staple in most women’s wardrobes for over 30 years. The reason this shoe can be found in most women’s closets across the country is simple: walking taller makes us feel more powerful, more confident, and sexier. Next time you throw on a pair of fabulous platforms I promise you, you’ll notice a little more pop in your walk and maybe even a little more strut.
The trick to looking fabulous in platforms and not like you’re on your way to a pole dancing class is to stick to one rule. Don’t buy any heel longer than 4″ or a platform taller than 1″. Not only will following this rule keep you from looking like a stripper, it will keep you from putting a potential ER visit on your feet.

2. Peasant Skirts
This beautiful style has lasted since the days of free love and Woodstock for two simple reasons. The peasant skirt flatters any body type and it is flowing and feminine. And who doesn’t want to look fabulous and feminine while still wearing something comfortable?
There are a few tips you should look over before going in search of that perfect peasant skirt.
– Full figured women, try to avoid the tea-length or just below the knee length peasant skirt. By wearing a skirt that length it shortens your legs and makes you look stumpy. Petite women, follow the same guidelines. Full figured women should either go for an ankle length or a just above the knee length in order to flatter their figure. Those styles will elongate your legs and make you look leaner.
– Petite women, avoid anything that falls below the knee. This will cut off your figure and make you look shorter. Try a peasant skirt that falls just above the knee with a pair of casual wedge sandals. It will elongate your figure and make your legs look fabulous.
– Tall women, go for the tea-length peasant skirt. Long legs can make this silhouette work. With flats, heels, or wedges it is the perfect length for the chick with the long legs.
3. Skinny Jeans & Leggings
Skinny jeans and leggings are the ultimate versatile pieces to have in your winter wardrobe. Whether you’re running out for a latte or meeting your girls for happy hour all you need is to change your hoodie to a slouchy sweater, your tennis shoes or casual boots to a pair of mid-calf boots with a small heel, throw on a long necklace and some earrings and you’re good to go.
Rachel came into my bar one night and she perfectly embodied the look that is right on trend for this winter. She was kind enough to let me take a picture of her that you can see here.
Now, leggings; the one trend we can thank the 1980’s for. Leggings are a great way to show off your legs in the winter without losing that all-important warmth factor. They are also perfect for layering. Leggings look great under a long sweater tunic or just a casual hoodie. The possibilities are endless; and let’s face it, they are just as comfortable as sweatpants and they still keep everything in place.
4. Patent Leather
Even though a lot of us were not there to experience it, we still are aware of the flappers and the cigarette girls of the 1950’s. The signature shoe of the time was the patent leather Mary Jane; a style of shoe that is still immensely popular today. In the 1960’s it was the ubiquitous white patent leather go-go boots that were all the rage. Today we see patent leather in all types of shoes and accessories. The patent leather handbag is a popular accent piece to any outfit. And you will still see many women strutting their stuff in a modern twist pair of classic Mary Janes like these from Nine West that you can find on Zappos.com.
Patent leather is a great way to give your outfit added impact while still remaining approachable. It is a trend that almost isn’t a trend, it’s a staple. Every woman should own either a pair of patent leather shoes or a patent leather bag, or both. It dresses up a look instantly without making it too obvious.
5. Animal Prints
This fabulous rend we can date all the way back to the cavewomen! Although we’ve adapted a more animal-friendly version of it over the centuries, it is still worn by the modern woman. Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City said, “Animal prints play off the idea of a woman being vixenish, wild, and fierce.” (Realsimple.com) Throughout the last century animal prints could be seen everywhere from red carpet events to being seen on the pin-up girls like Bettie Page.
The idea with animal prints is not to go overboard. Make an animal print the accent piece of your outfit. Have an outrageous leopard print top? Keep the rest of your ensemble simple. No large accessories are needed when the centerpiece of your outfit is the statement. If you make too many “statements” people will get confused. The easiest way to incorporate animal prints into your wardrobe is through accessories. A scarf, clutch, tote, or pair of shoes will do the trick of making that wonderfully fierce fashion statement that animal prints make. Check out these boots from Shoedazzle.com called Yesenia. The outfit that the model is wearing with those boots is perfect because the boots make such a dramatic statement so the rest of the outfit doesn’t have to.
There you have it, ladies- five items that every woman should have in her closet that will never go out of style. Keep watching the trends though, because all of these pieces can mesh with the current trends of the season.
And, as always, happy shopping, ladies!
