Marty Angelo, author and prison minister recently took some time out of his schedule to answer some questions while he was in town. Today we will look briefly at his ministry and his books.
San Diego Christianity and Culture Examiner: It is now 30 years later and you are going in and out of prisons, rehabs, etc; ministering to convicts, substance abusers, and the like. Many people who get out, never want to go back. What keeps you going back like that?
Marty Angelo: I was once there. Many of these men and women have reached a bottom in their life and need the hope of Jesus Christ. God has given me a heart for those in correctional facilities.
Examiner: What are some of the ‘rewards’ of your ministry over the years?
Marty: I have donated over 60,000 copies of my book to various facilities and inmates over the years and that in itself makes it worthwhile as I am simply planting the seed of the gospel. But I have received many letters from inmates who have read my book and given their life to God or just wrote to share how much God has done in their life through reading my book. It’s good hearing what God is doing, even to those on the ‘inside’.
Examiner: You have even reached out to celebrities when they were going through their various downs. Some of the celebrities you have made contact with include Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Eminem, Dr Dre, etc.
Marty: Yea, there is a whole list of them on my website. I have a heart for them, just like anybody else. I send them a copy of my book and a personalized letter to let them know they’re not alone and there is help out there other than the rehabs, prisons, etc. I let them know that it doesn’t have to come down to that.
Examiner: Are you still in touch with the Lohan family?
Marty: Yes. Michael, Lindsay’s father; reached out to me when Lindsay began going through her struggles. He asked me if I could reach out to his daughter and her mother. What many don’t know is that Michael gave his life to Christ few years back when he was in prison and went to Teen Challenge. He read my book and reached out to me.
Examiner: With the recent death of Michael Jackson and the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray that has been in the news; what is your view?
Marty: Michael was your typical drug addict. He would do anything to get his next ‘high’, but in his case sleep. He wouldn’t take no for an answer and Dr Murray got sucked into it. It’s a sad thing what happened, don’t get me wrong, but whether it was Dr Murray or not; Michael would have just found somebody else.
Examiner: Your book Once Life Matters: A New Beginning was released in 2005. It is your testimony, or autobiography as some would put it. Why did it take so long to release it?
Marty: God’s timing. I had the opportunity to release it sooner, but at the time both of my parents were sick, and I was caring for them. Promoting the book at the time would have been hard with everything else going on.
Examiner: You actually have a new book, Vision of New Jerusalem: Now; that you’re releasing soon. Do we have a date for it yet?
Marty: We are pushing for a mid-December release. It was supposed to be out this month but some editing issues occurred and delayed it.
Examiner: Can you share a little about this upcoming book?
Marty: Vision of New Jerusalem is about how we are the church; Christ lives in us. We aren’t called to just gather in a church building; we’re called to minister. We are the new Jerusalem. The new Earth is us. We are living in it.
Examiner: Thank you very much for your time Marty. It’s greatly appreciated that you would take time out of your schedule for this.
