The Beatles sang to us, “All you need is love.”
Hal David wrote in his popular song, recorded by several artists, “What the world needs now, is love, sweet love. No, not just for some, but for everyone.”
In biblical context, God is love (1 John 4:16). Truly, all we need is God.
Hal David, however, speaks to the point of this article. The world needs love, and no, not just for some, but for everyone. Where is this quality and quantity of love going to come from?
Crunching into a crisp apple and all its juicy goodness, biting into a slice of watermelon, juice running down your chin and arms, the tasty citrus flavor of a ripe orange; all these experiences describe what the world needs from us. The world needs to be able to see, and partake of the love that God has put into us. Freely God loves us, and freely we are to give that love to all we meet.
The love of Holy Spirit that God has put within us is not just a one-time tasting, but a feast of eating until those who hunger are left with room for no more.
I am reminded of the block parties we had when I was growing up. There were several tables covered with all kinds of food, a whole pig on the spit, ears of corn wrapped in foil roasting in the coals, and nearly two dozen families would come. There were musicians who would play, games for people of all ages, and not to be forgotten, more than a dozen tasty desserts. People would start showing up in the early afternoon, and some would remain until almost daylight the next morning. The Police Department would be notified of the event and the officers on duty were always invited and would often come and have some of the delicious bounty. Yet, there was still food enough left over for another whole day’s gathering and eating.
This is what a feast is. Anyone who can come is welcome to come. There is more than enough for anyone who shows up, even if all they bring with them is their need.
The love that is fruit of Holy Spirit is how the world – regardless of belief or lack thereof, tradition, practice or status – will know we are followers of the Way of the Lord Jesus Christ; they will know us by our boundless, ever-giving, selfless love for everyone we meet. It is this love that will heal the broken-hearted, give hope to the hopeless, show to those who believe they are unwanted and to forever be cast aside that they are indeed precious and special and made to be loved. It is this love-fruit of Holy Spirit that enables us to love those who would oppose us as enemies, and causes us to forgive and pray for those who would despitefully use us to be abundantly and richly blessed with the salvation, mercy, grace and love of our Almighty God and Father.
This is the love the world needs now, no, not just for some, but for everyone. This love is all you need, and all I need, to give evidence of the love our Father has for everyone we meet. All you need is love, and God is the love we both need and give.
