How many of us have treasured childhood memories of opening a box of Legos? The feel of the cool plastic in our hands, the multicolored keys to an infinite variety of creations? If you are nodding your head in agreement, you’ve likely spent many hours fiddling with models for everything from cityscapes to space ships. And quite possibly many of us LEGO fans have taken our love of building things on to the virtual world of Minecraft; assembling castles, rollercoasters, and replicas of all manner of buildings and pop culture figures. Now, the game that rekindled gamers’ love of little toy bricks has come full circle, Minecraft is working on its own line of LEGO build sets via LEGO CUUSOO, a site where users can suggest new LEGO sets to the makers of those iconic plastic bricks.
According to PC World and Yahoo News, Mojang and LEGO have been discussing the possibility of a Minecraft themed Lego set. Mojang’s business director Daniel Kaplan has been reportedly ‘working closely’ with LEGO. ‘Minecraft is about placing blocks to make anything you can imagine in the virtual world. You can build anything you can imagine with LEGO bricks in the physical world. Minecraft and LEGO are just meant to be together.’ says the software company in a post on the CUUSOO site.
It will be interesting to see exactly how this project will come together, while the world of Minecraft is infinitely generated as PC World mentioned, LEGO already produces most of the pieces they’d need for a hypothetical set on a regular basis. Forests, mountains, and even desert landscapes are already a part of the company’s regular lines, such as Kingdoms and Pharaoh. Unique molds will have to be made for recognizable Minecraft critters like the Creepers and Endermen but otherwise the tie-in set will likely require little that the brick company doesn’t already make if they decide to go through with the proposal.
At the time of writing, Mojang has obtained the required ten thousand supporters for the Denmark-based corporation to consider the suggestion, gaining momentum with the project and promising to donate one percent of all profits to charity. Congratulations with that first step Notch… so can we expect a Power Miners/Rock Raiders tie-in to appear in Minecraft? Please?
