8. Fresh herbs make food taste better and are good for us, too. And, they are relatively easy to grow indoors if you have a spot that gets enough sunlight. Since lots of people don’t think about taking the time or incentive to start one, an indoor herb garden can make a wonderful gift, and it is something easy the kids can help with. You could easily spend $30-$60 on a kit bought at store, but they can be assembled by you for much cheaper. Get some seeds and potting soil at your local hardware store (parsley, basil, thyme, cilantro, rosemary, mint, oregano and dill are popular choices) and find some herb pots at either the hardware store, a nursery such as Hicks or Martin Viette. You can often find sets of 3 or 4 that come with trays, so decide on your price range and choose the type and design you like best. Get the pots started and have a little green to show by Christmas.
9. Every woman loves to be pampered, so give the women in your life a special gift they can enjoy for months – a homemade exfoliating scrub. All it takes is a nice jar, a half a cup of sugar, a bit of cold-pressed oil and a drop of essential oil or pure vanilla extract for scent, if desired. You can find many recipes online or get creative with the scents you choose. You will want to use a glass jar with a lid, which can be found at most dollar stores, and perhaps tie a pretty bow around the jar.
10. This gift idea may not be one that you use as the main gift but it could be a fun project to do with the kids, and one that could be added on to most of the people on your list. Most people like to have pleasant odors in their cars and homes so making a homemade air freshener is a gift that will be useful and appreciated by most folks. One idea is to make a natural gel freshener: you will need a heat-proof jar, powdered or granulated gelatin, essential oil, table salt and cold water, plus a drop of food coloring if you want to make it look pretty. Boil water, add it to the ingredients, whisk and let cool. To make one for your car, get creative with felt or another fabric, add some essential oil and tie a thread around it so it hangs from the rearview mirror. This should last longer than store-bought varieties, plus it will have a personal touch, and none of the toxicity associated with those you buy.
