Weather forecasts are always important to golfers. Whether they are checking the weather before a round or choosing a day to make a tee time, the weather is a big factor in making decisions about when and where to play.
As we in Omaha are into the second week of November, golfers have pretty well stopped checking out the forecast- at least as it relates to trying to get out and play. Highs have been in the 40s, snow is always a possibility and that terrible “wind-chill” word has rejoined our active vocabularies. Fortunately for golfers in Omaha, they never need to put the golf clubs away for the winter because of Beyond Golf.
Beyond golf, located just north of Giles Rd. on about 120th Street, is a full service bar and restaurant, but that’s typically not the reason for visiting. Along the back wall of the bar/restaurant area are 3 very large screens, connected to, as they call it, “the world’s best HD golf simulators.”
The three golf areas are about 12’ by 15’, have room enough for anyone to swing a golf club, have a place for anywhere from 1-4 bags of clubs, and an artificial grass hitting area. Golfers have access to a computer in each golfing area and can set up a round of golf on a number of the world’s most famous golf courses. Players hit tee shots, approach shots, chips and putts- just like they would in a normal round of golf, and the high-definition screens and simulators provide some fairly realistic feedback as golfers hit shots down the imaginary holes. The simulators keep score for players and aggregate statistics as well.

Golfers can play alone, with a partner, in a foursome and even in a league. Click here for league information. Players can sign up for year-round, weekly leagues or play only in the wintertime.
Paying to play at Beyond Golf is much like playing for real on typical Omaha-area courses. Click here for rates. It takes about the same amount of time to play a simulated round as it does to play a real one, too.
Beyond Golf can accommodate up to 150 people at once, but with only 3 screens which are occupied for sometimes hours at a time, only up to 12 people can be golfing at once. Customers can rent the simulators by the hour or reserve them for longer in private parties. A bachelor party or corporate outing can even rent out the entire place. Behind each simulator and golfing area is a table for your golfing group and is a nice place to converse and watch sports on the bar’s televisions.
The food and drink at Beyond Golf is typical of any bar/restaurant in town. One nice thing about Beyond Golf if you are having a party or outing there, they will provide food from either their kitchen or the pizza joint next door, but you are welcome to bring your own.
The playing experience: the first time golfers play at Beyond Golf is a learning experience. Driving the ball is straightforward and pretty accurate. Depth perception is sometimes a problem and unfamiliarity with courses is as well. Iron play is as accurate as driving and yardage information is always provided. Chipping is less accurate and easier than it should be. Putting is somewhat of a joke and is pretty unrealistic. There is a function, however, that allows putts to be “gimmies” if they are inside of a couple of feet, which speeds up play and allows scores to stay believable. After a round or two, golfers will understand the system a bit better and enjoy the experience much more.
With the timing of this article, I would be remised if I didn’t mention gift cards. With the holidays right around the corner, gift cards are a great way to give the golfers in your life a way to scratch that golfing itch in the middle of the Nebraska winter. A $40 gift card pays for 18 holes of golf and often, a token is given for every $40 purchased that is good for an extra 9 holes. Check out gift card information here.
Beyond Golf also offers clinics, lessons, package deals and tournaments.
Overall, Beyond Golf is a wonderful venue for some informal golfing competition, a small gathering or just a time to sit and have a drink. If you or any golfer you know has a golf itch to scratch this winter, check out Beyond Golf. Click above for their Web site or give them a call at 402-916-4727. During the winter, hours are extended, so play just about any time you want until the spring arrives. Look below for their hours.
