My wife and I just got back from our vacation. I am sorry but I wasn’t able to post any articles while we were away as I didn’t have access to a computer long enough to write. We wanted to do something different so we took the AMTRAK from Jacksonville, Florida to San Diego California, a 4 day trip.
That was a neat trip and we saw a lot of the country we hadn’t seen before. It was really cool traveling by rail as we didn’t have all of the hassles you must put up with in air travel. We took 6 suit cases and didn’t have to pay extra for bags, and were helped with our carry on bags by friendly red caps when we changed trains.
We got the “Roomette” a tiny compartment with two facing seats which make into a bed at night. Our meals were included in the fare and the food was good. You don’t have a lot of space when the beds are made, but you get used to it and it is actually pretty comfortable. You have to walk to the other end of your car to use the bath room.
You also get a seat in the observation car which has glass walls and top and provides a great view. The seats are comfortable and you can buy soft drinks in that car.
The dining car is comfortable and has great service and good food. The meals are included in your fare when you book a roomette.
Some of the places we would have enjoyed seeing passed by in the night. When I make another trip I’ll have to look into stopping overnight in some of those places. On this trip we had to meet a schedule to catch the ride home.
We stopped in Washington D.C. and had time to have dinner with our son. He took the subway to meet us, and we rode it downtown to the restaurant, “Ben’s Chilli Bowl”, where we had some great hot dogs and checked out the photos of visiting politicians.
We traveled on to Los Angles, California, where we caught the Pacific Surf Rider, which runs along the beach. We saw lots of people surfing, and a lot of pretty scenery between LA and San Diego.
We got off the train at San Diego and took a cab two blocks to our hotel, the bayside Holiday Inn. It was across the street from our ride home, Holland America Lines MS Statendam.
We took the Statendam around central America, through the Panama Canal, and back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where another son picked us up and drove us back to our starting point Jacksonville, Florida.
During this trip we stopped at three ports in Mexico, one in Guatemala, Panama, and Columbia. It was a bit of an adventure, and truly enjoyable. The Orient Express has nothing on AMTRAK, the length of the rail trip was 3700 miles. I think the ocean voyage was around 6000 miles.
I hope I haven’t bored you with the details. It was pretty neat and I thought some of you might be interested in trying these two modes of old timey transportation for a change.
I know most of you don’t have the time, so you have to travel by air. It is a pain carrying your shoes through security because of the shoe bomber. Don’t fret, it could be worse, airport security did give us a pass on the under wear bomber.
Tomorrow it is back to politics and I would like to leave you with something to think about. Both parties in the super committee are locked up because they can’t put their political agendas aside long enough to attend to the peoples business.
We can no longer afford people who won’t do their job, with 14 million Americans out of work who would leap at the chance to do worthwhile work If we don’t fire everyone who is up for re-election we deserve whatever we get in the next 4 years..
