The difference in wealth between rich and poor has widened in most advanced economies. The socialist economic model, long pursued by our own democratic party does not seem to be delivering. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, even in socialist economies. Taxing the rich hasn’t done the job.
Our own government has largely escaped from the constraints of the US Constitution and managed to change our economy from the capitalist economy our founding fathers designed, to crony capitalism where the federal government fudges rules on business to gain campaign contributions.
The idea of socialism is pretty much like communism; take money from those who have more and give it to those who have less. Guess who determines who has less; your omnipotent government, of course.
Our own government takes money from 50 million hard working Americans to deliver it to the 48 million Americans of working age who do not work and draw some form of welfare; entitlements, the politically correct call it.
Why does our government call what started out as welfare, entitlements? There are real entitlement programs, Social Security and Medicare. The recipients of Social Security and Medicare paid into those programs all their working lives. Calling welfare programs entitlements blurs the difference between the real entitlement programs and welfare, and I believe the accounting for these programs has been merged until it is impossible to determine the cost of any of them.
The result of political correctness is that when our government talks about cutting entitlements it is always Social Security and Medicare they talk mention. Congress will never be able to cut Social Security and Medicare without the public raising a ruckus so welfare is safe.
It is the democrats who jealously guard welfare programs, as that is where much of their voter base lies. They are bribing the welfare recipients to vote democratic with our money. Most of the people who work in government agencies also vote democratic. Have you noticed the explosive growth of government since the democrats gained control of our government? The people who work for the government also make more money than their civilian counterparts.
After reading about the financial problems of Greece you realize that this sort of government practice is what got their economy in the shape it is in.
The reason the divide between rich and poor is widening is that the government is taking the wealth of its citizens; the poor, and giving it to whoever they choose. I say the poor are the citizens, and they are the poor. They have to pay the bills for the excesses of their government, and the more they have to pay the poorer they become.
Taxing the rich will only make all of us poor, except the government, of course. Eventually there will be insufficient economic activity to support this house of cards and the entire economy will collapse, as Russia’s did several years ago.
Red China has begun to embrace facets of capitalism; but they are not capitalists, they still want government control over their economy. They have realized that a capitalist economy is where the real potential for growth lies.
An interesting situation is occurring, China has begun to embrace capitalism, and the wealth of its citizens is increasing, as evidenced by the new wave of consumerism there. All of the western democracies are pursuing the idea of a socialist utopia and the wealth of their citizens is disappearing into the coffers of government; as evidenced by the growing divide between the rich and the poor.
Western democracies have been unable to get ALL the wealth of the rich, but they are making headway getting the wealth of the ordinary citizens; the poor.
