Grimm first aired on NBC on October 28 with the tag line ‘Not your ususal suspects.’ The procedural crime drama set in Portland, Oregon focuses on Nick Burkhardt, a homicide detective and a Grimm. In the seven episodes that have aired so far, viewers have learned some vital information, along with Nick, about being a Grimm or a Grimm creature. Viewers learned that Nick is more than your average homicide detective; he’s actually a descendant of the first criminal profilers in history and those fairy tales are all true.
Episode 101 introduced the recurring cast of Grimm characters. Other members of the Portland Homicide Department include Nick’s partner Hank Griffin, Sgt. Wu, and Captain Renard who has something to do with the attacks on Nick’s Aunt Marie. Other characters took on the fairy tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the real-life Grimm creatures introduced are Nick’s girlfriend Juliette, a veterinarian and a Blutbad named Eddie Monroe.
Episode 102 introduced viewers to the Grimm creatures known as Jagerbars. When two teens broke into a wealthy house while the owners were away and made themselves at home, they nearly ended up dead when they became part of the ritual Roh-Hatz ceremony of the youngest Jagerbar.
Episode 103 revealed a close connection between Captain Renard and a Hexenbiest by the name of Adalind Schade (the woman who attacked both Aunt Marie and Nick in the hospital). Nick was responsible for Adalind’s safety, but it was really Nick that the Queen Bee – a Mellifer – believed was the one in danger.
Episode 104 ‘Lonelyhearts‘ was based on the story of the murderous Bluebeard and brought Nick face to face with a goat-like creature called a Ziegevolk. When Nick enlisted Monroe’s help to spy on the charismatic Billy Capra, even Monroe was almost taken in by his charms.
Episode 105 ‘Danse Macabre’ looked to the tale of the Pied Piper for its inspiration. When Roddy, a teenaged Reinigen, is expelled from a presitigious prep school, he exacts his revenge on the students who caused it to happen by using his violin-playing skills.
Epidsode 106 has Monroe dealing not only with a friend from the past, but a girlfriend from the past; and this girlfriend does not follow the strict program of diet drugs, and Pilates that Monroe does in order to stay reformed. Unfortunately she is involved with a past crime against some Bauerschwein and she quickly leaves town before Nick can apprehend her.
Episode 107 used the story of Rapunzel to explore the phenomon of feral children. A Blutbad teenaged girl is discovered in the remote forests around Mt. Hood nine years after she went missing. Marijuana cultivation on public lands also played a part in this storyline.
What fairy tales will be featured in episodes yet to be aired in this first season of Grimm? Will Nick learn more about his heritage and will Captain Renard be discovered for who he really is?
